[0:00] Olaf: So yesterday was Michael J. Fox's birthday.

[0:02] J.J.: Was it?

[0:03] Olaf: Yes. I'm wearing my Team Fox shirt for Parkinson's.

[0:06] J.J.: That's cool. I love to support that.

[0:08] Olaf: Sweet! Yeah, you were telling me that you bought tickets to Back to the Future the Musical.

[0:12] J.J.: Yes! Back to the Future the Musical is coming to my neck of the woods in October, so looking forward to going to that.

[0:18] Olaf: Nice! Are you going on the 21st?

[0:21] J.J.: No. If it's in Vegas on October 21st and you're not going on October 21st, that is a wasted opportunity.

[0:27] Olaf: I am shackled by the schedule that I work and I was lucky enough that one of the shows fell on a day that I have off, so that is the day that I am going. I haven't seen it, and I want to see it, and I was really nervous when they said they were making a musical of Back to the Future because...

[0:43] J.J.: Oh, same. Clearly. Why wouldn't anybody be nervous about a musical version of an amazing movie like that?

[0:49] Olaf: But I'm really glad to know that it's, from what I understand, pretty good. I've heard really good things. I've heard the effects and everything are incredible, and it's just really, it's really cool. So I'm hoping that that immersiveness that they've talked about and all of that travels with it.

[1:05] J.J.: Right. So yeah, I'm excited. I can't wait.

[1:08] Olaf: Nice. Well, I'm excited. I've been excited about tonight ever since you brought it up. I'm also a little nervous, to be honest with you.

[1:15] J.J.: I am very excited.

[1:17] Olaf: Well, are we keeping everybody in suspense here, or are we just jumping right in?

[1:22] J.J.: Well, let's get back to the movie theater first, all right? Let's get into the right mindset. So everybody, we're going back to the movie theater with J.J. and Olaf.

[1:31] Olaf: Hey, guys. It is our podcast, Back to the Movie Theater. My name's Olaf. We are two guys that just love movies. We love everything about them, talking movies, living movies. It's what we do.

[1:43] J.J.: And with me as always is one of my great friends, J.J.

[1:46] Olaf: Hello.

[1:47] J.J.: Hello. And I'm also the co-host. I'm not just on the hot seat tonight. I am, to use an Olaf phrase, I'm not a special guest. I actually do this with Olaf. I am a co-host, but I'm really glad to be here. And like I said earlier, I'm excited as well, but not as excited as you are because I don't feel like the pressure is nearly as high for you as it is for me.

[2:10] Olaf: Well, there is pressure because if I didn't craft this well enough, I'm the one to blame. And I think we should tell the audience what exactly it is that you've crafted for me for this particular episode.

[2:21] J.J.: So we've decided that for this episode, we are going to do some movie trivia to test some knowledge. And I have come up with my own trivia list that J.J. has not seen. He knows nothing about it. So we are testing J.J.'s movie knowledge on this episode today.

[2:39] Olaf: And for those who know me, know that I love movie trivia. However, not knowing anything about this, I don't know what the topics are, what the subjects are, like where we're going here. So I am completely in the dark. So I am, yes, a little nervous.

[2:55] J.J.: You know, if I were in your position, I would also be nervous only because as someone who also loves movie trivia, I always feel like I don't test well with anything. You put me in the hot seat, you start asking me questions, and then suddenly I can't remember anything. And I've had that experience when you and I are talking like that in this setting. I've had those moments where I've been sitting here with you in these types of conversations talking about whatever topic we're talking about, where I'm all of a sudden questioning my knowledge or doubting myself because I don't want to mess up because I know people are listening and really listening for not only our insight, but to get correct information. So yeah.

[3:43] Olaf: Exactly. So are you ready? Do you feel ready?

[3:47] J.J.: I don't know what else I could possibly do to prepare for this because you never gave me some sort of, these are the genres we're hitting, these are the categories.

[3:56] Olaf: All right. Okay.

[3:57] J.J.: So to answer your question, maybe.

[4:01] Olaf: So as we do this, we encourage our listeners to play along and we'll see how you do. And what I'll do is, you know how sometimes when you watch game shows, you feel like whoever it is that's answering the question gives the dramatic pause. Even if they know the answer, they're not going to blurt it out right away because it doesn't make for good television. They really want to squeeze out the drama of it all. So if I know the answer right away, I'll give it a minute to percolate.

[4:32] J.J.: All right. So are we doing, how many questions is this like broken up into categories?

[4:37] Olaf: Well, that's really not for you to worry about.

[4:40] J.J.: Well, okay. Well, I'm going to worry a little bit, but I'm fine.

[4:44] Olaf: All right. So for J.J. and for our listeners at home, it is time to dive into our Back to the Movie Theater Movie Trivia Night.

[4:56] J.J.: Back to the Movie Theater Trivia Game.

[5:01] Olaf: All right, ladies and gentlemen. So tonight we are doing a little movie trivia. It's general trivia, so anything is possible. We encourage you to play along at home. I will ask the question. I will even ask the question twice just to make sure it gets across and then we'll go from there and we'll see how J.J. does and we'll see how you do at home.

[5:21] J.J.: All right. I'm ready.

[5:23] Olaf: So without further ado, let's get started with question number one.

[5:29] Olaf: Question one. Kevin Bacon made his film debut in what comedy?

[5:36] J.J.: Do I get multiple choice or is this just like it's a straight up? I need to know the answer.

[5:41] Olaf: This is a straight up.

[5:42] J.J.: Okay. All right.

[5:43] Olaf: Multiple choice.

[5:45] J.J.: This is really, you know.

[5:46] Olaf: You were just saying, well, I don't want it to be elementary.

[5:49] J.J.: This is true, but there are other people playing along at home.

[5:52] Olaf: That is also true.

[5:53] J.J.: And I feel like even with my question about multiple choice, I feel like I've already given the audience enough time to figure out an answer to this question. If I'm correct, I love this movie, by the way. If I am correct, this movie came out the year I was born and it's one of those where I'm like, yes, I'm cool with this movie being as old as I am because it's still amazing. So my answer to this question is Animal House.

[6:20] Olaf: Judges.

[6:22] J.J.: You got it.

[6:23] Olaf: It is National Lampoon's Animal House.

[6:26] J.J.: I was thinking about being a stickler when you were just like Animal House. And I didn't know if I needed to answer in the form of a question.

[6:32] Olaf: What is National Lampoon's Animal House?

[6:34] J.J.: This isn't Jeopardy.

[6:36] Olaf: This is true. I asked the question. I didn't give you the answer. So to go one step further, I will say this to get us into the next question.

[6:44] J.J.: Thank you, sir. May I have another?

[6:48] Olaf: Yes, you may. And here we go.

[6:50] Olaf: Question number two. How old was Judy Garland when she appeared in The Wizard of Oz?

[6:56] J.J.: OK. One of my mom's all time favorite movies. So I grew up watching it as a kid, as I think most kids did our age. You know, it was on TV all the time. So again, one of those that we're just inundated with. But my guess is and I think I'm going to say this with pretty high level of confidence. She was 14.

[7:14] Olaf: Judges.

[7:16] J.J.: What? Are you sure?

[7:18] Olaf: When?

[7:20] J.J.: Do you want one more?

[7:22] Olaf: One more attempt or just like really confident in that.

[7:26] J.J.: But now if I had another guess, it would be something higher and much further away from that. So it's not like I would guess I wouldn't guess 15. I would guess something like now I would think she's like 21. But I don't think she was that old.

[7:39] Olaf: But maybe maybe she was.

[7:41] J.J.: So is that your second guess?

[7:43] Olaf: Sure. If I had to say if I had to give a second guess, I would say she's she's 21 because I really thought she was.

[7:50] Olaf: And just so you know, I'm very tempted to fact check this right now, but I'm not going to.

[7:54] J.J.: You can fact check all you want. I didn't just willy nilly put this together without checking the answers. I am very aware that you did your own set of fact checking for this particular episode.

[8:05] Olaf: So 21.

[8:06] J.J.: Second attempt, 21.

[8:09] Olaf: The correct answer was 16.

[8:12] J.J.: She was 16 years old.

[8:14] Olaf: OK. And you do not like that.

[8:16] J.J.: I don't. I don't. And only because I was just so confident in my first answer. Like I really thought she was 14. But I mean, OK, 16. I mean, it's still very young.

[8:27] Olaf: Yeah. Sorry, mom. I got that one wrong.

[8:30] J.J.: All right. Moving on, we are hitting question number three.

[8:34] Olaf: Question number three is name the two actors who have both been killed by a Terminator, a Xenomorph and a Predator.

[8:41] J.J.: Two actors.

[8:43] Olaf: OK, so I know one confidently.

[8:46] J.J.: I'm sure you do.

[8:47] Olaf: But I'm using this time to think of the second one because.

[8:51] J.J.: OK, let's just get the first one out of the way.

[8:53] Olaf: The first one is Bill Paxton.

[8:55] J.J.: Bill Paxton had the pleasure of getting killed by a Terminator and Terminator by an alien in Aliens and by a Predator in Predator 2.

[9:05] Olaf: So that's Bill Paxton.

[9:07] J.J.: And that is a.

[9:09] Olaf: Yes, one of Olaf's favorite actors.

[9:12] J.J.: I can't stand Bill Paxton.

[9:14] Olaf: R.I.P.

[9:16] J.J.: The second actor who you're telling me has been killed by a Predator, a Xenomorph and a Terminator. Ah, I just thought of it. I think I'm pretty sure I'm going to give you a hint. Do not overthink or overanalyze this.

[9:34] J.J.: Well, it's almost it's a little tricky because the person I think of wasn't technically killed by an alien.

[9:39] Olaf: Yes, he was.

[9:41] J.J.: Maybe he was. OK, I'm I'm I'm going to go with Lance Henriksen.

[9:46] Olaf: He played Bishop in Aliens. He was a detective in Terminator and he was in A.V.P. Alien versus Predator as Bishop. But honestly, I can't remember if I don't know if cancer killed him or if the Predator got him or if the alien got him. I can't remember.

[10:06] Olaf: Judges.

[10:08] J.J.: OK, it was Lance Henriksen.

[10:10] Olaf: And I know what you're going to say. He was torn apart by the alien queen in Aliens.

[10:15] J.J.: So he was yeah, he wasn't technically killed because he lived well and he technically wasn't human. But we can consider that a death by the alien queen because he didn't make it in Alien 3.

[10:27] Olaf: He was he didn't he didn't want to be brought back to life by Sigourney Weaver in Alien 3.

[10:32] J.J.: So but he was he was in Alien 3.

[10:34] Olaf: Yeah, he was. But he was dead.

[12:05] J.J.: So we're going to take that one and then he faced off with a predator in AVP and met his fate.

[12:12] Olaf: Got it. The other person I was thinking of was the girl who plays Vasquez in Aliens.

[12:19] J.J.: She was in Terminator 2. Yes, and she was in Aliens.

[12:22] Olaf: But she didn't make the predator.

[12:25] J.J.: No.

[12:29] Olaf: Yeah, Lance Henderson I pulled out as I was talking.

[12:34] J.J.: That's why people do that on the game shows. They're talking themselves to an answer. I get it.

[12:40] Olaf: So far, not too bad. That was question 3. That wasn't easy.

[12:44] J.J.: You've gotten 2 out of 3 questions so far. I'm really upset. Again, I just want to say I'm sorry to my mom for missing the Wizard of Oz question.

[12:47] Olaf: All right, so as someone who brags about dates and numbers as well as someone who brags about their love and passion for the Oscars, this next question, a lot of pressure.

[13:02] J.J.: This is a lot of pressure.

[13:03] Olaf: So here we go. There have been a lot of Oscars ceremonies.

[13:06] J.J.: There sure have been. A lot of statues handed out.

[13:08] Olaf: Question number 4. John Williams has been nominated for an Oscar 54 times.

[13:16] J.J.: Correct. How many has he received?

[13:20] Olaf: Okay, that's a great question. My first answer is not enough.

[13:26] J.J.: He has not received nearly enough for the amount of times he's been nominated. Also the oldest, if I'm not mistaken, to be nominated. He was like 91, I think, when he just got nominated for the last Indiana Jones.

[13:38] Olaf: And he hasn't won in a while. So the correct answer is 5.

[13:43] J.J.: He has won 5 Academy Awards for Best Original Score.

[13:49] Olaf: You are correct 5 out of 54 times. But can you tell me what those 5 are?

[13:57] J.J.: So I can't.

[14:04] Olaf: Jaws?

[14:05] J.J.: That is 1 of the 5.

[14:08] Olaf: Star Wars?

[14:09] J.J.: That is 2 of the 5.

[14:10] Olaf: Okay, so if he won for Star Wars, he didn't win for Close Encounters, so can't give you that.

[14:15] J.J.: I want to say he was nominated... Schindler's List. Sorry, I think that's the last time he won.

[14:20] Olaf: That is 3 out of 5.

[14:22] J.J.: I think that's the last one he won.

[14:24] Olaf: And you are correct as well.

[14:26] J.J.: 30 years, man.

[14:29] Olaf: E.T.?

[14:30] J.J.: E.T.? That is 4. You got one left.

[14:32] Olaf: Now, is this last one a score also? Or is it some sort of like specialty thing he won early in his career?

[14:41] J.J.: I believe it was...

[14:44] Olaf: I thought you had it there. I thought you had...

[14:46] J.J.: Well, I just... I have the 5 names.

[14:48] Olaf: Okay, okay.

[14:49] J.J.: You're asking what was...

[14:51] Olaf: But like the other ones are films and they're the score. This is also a film, but I don't...

[14:56] J.J.: This is also a film, but I believe it was adapted score.

[15:01] Olaf: Okay, right.

[15:03] J.J.: It's going to bug me too, because you're going to tell me.

[15:05] Olaf: I don't know. I can't remember.

[15:07] J.J.: Fiddler on the Roof.

[15:08] Olaf: Yeah, okay.

[15:09] J.J.: That was his first one. Mom, I'm sorry again. That's 2, because my mom loves Fiddler on the Roof.

[15:14] Olaf: Well, you still got the question correct.

[15:16] J.J.: I did. I did. You tried to get me with a bonus. That's an advanced.

[15:20] Olaf: Not bad. Not bad.

[15:22] J.J.: You got 4 out of the 5 bonus deep dive questions.

[15:25] Olaf: Yeah, that makes up for the Judy Garland.

[15:29] J.J.: Okay, we'll ask your mom.

[15:33] Olaf: Moving on, we are hitting question number 5.

[15:37] J.J.: Number 5.

[15:39] Olaf: What year was Gone with the Wind released?

[15:43] J.J.: Oh, okay. Well, you love dates.

[15:45] Olaf: I do, and it's one of those... I feel like, without overthinking it, this is like some sort of trick question. I'm going to confidently say 1939.

[15:56] Olaf: And the answer is...

[15:59] J.J.: 1939. Came out the same year as Wizard of Oz.

[16:01] Olaf: Yep, and well, we all know how that went.

[16:05] J.J.: All right, moving on. We are hitting up question number 6.

[16:09] Olaf: Number 6. Who said, let your conscience be your guide?

[16:15] J.J.: Again, I don't want to overthink these things, because I'm like, you let people play.

[16:22] Olaf: I'm overthinking. It's Jiminy Cricket.

[16:24] J.J.: Is Jiminy Cricket from Pinocchio?

[16:26] Olaf: Okay, because at some point, I'm like, is he just stalling for the audience to give them time? Or is he stalling because he can't remember?

[16:35] J.J.: No, it's Jiminy Cricket.

[16:36] Olaf: Is it?

[16:39] J.J.: The judges say you are correct.

[16:41] Olaf: Yes.

[16:43] J.J.: All right, so here we are. Number 7.

[16:47] Olaf: By the way, we're 7 in now. How do you feel?

[16:50] J.J.: Oh, I feel good. I feel good just because my brain is warmed up to everything. But again, I don't want to get too comfortable, because you're going to throw me one, and I'm going to...

[17:01] Olaf: I was feeling... Let me just tell you, I'm feeling a lot more comfortable now than I did after the question number 2 when I got it wrong.

[17:08] J.J.: The Judy Garland, but... Okay, I feel like these next three might be more of a challenge.

[17:13] Olaf: Well, the alien predator Terminator question, that was a really good question.

[17:19] J.J.: They're all good, but that was a really good one.

[17:21] Olaf: We're ebbing and flowing.

[17:22] J.J.: Yeah, peaks and valleys.

[17:23] Olaf: Peaks and valleys.

[17:25] J.J.: So here we go with number 7. The romantic film Meet Joe Black, starring Anthony Hopkins and Brad Pitt, was a retelling of what movie?

[17:35] Olaf: On a side note, I love Meet Joe Black. It's... Oh, it is my favorite romance film. And the director, Martin Brest, is such an inconsistent director, in my opinion. Like, he directed Beverly Hills Cop, Scent of a Woman, and Meet Joe Black. And he directed Gigli.

[17:54] J.J.: Not great.

[17:55] Olaf: What's going on there? What's happening?

[17:58] J.J.: So to go back to your question, the correct answer is a movie called Death Takes a Holiday.

[18:06] Olaf: That is correct.

[18:07] J.J.: All right. I have it on DVD.

[18:09] Olaf: Meet Joe Black. And the special edition DVD of Meet Joe Black comes with a copy of Death Takes a Holiday.

[18:18] J.J.: That's fun.

[18:19] Olaf: See, I wasn't sure if you would get this one, only because I don't feel like a lot of people have seen Meet Joe Black.

[18:27] J.J.: It didn't really do well.

[18:29] Olaf: No, but I feel like people have seen it because of TV and the DVD.

[18:36] J.J.: I feel like that's where...

[18:37] Olaf: Maybe.

[18:38] J.J.: Because, I mean...

[18:39] Olaf: Because it had a very long runtime.

[18:41] J.J.: Yeah, it's a long movie.

[18:42] Olaf: But it's so great. If you were buying it when it came out, it was on VHS and it was two VHS tapes.

[18:49] J.J.: Well, I don't know. It was the late 90s. I don't think people were getting that on VHS in the late...

[18:55] Olaf: I think it was a DVD purchase.

[18:56] J.J.: Yes, of course. Nobody did that.

[19:00] Olaf: If you're getting it on VHS in the late 90s...

[19:03] J.J.: No one bought that on VHS.

[19:09] Olaf: But I absolutely love that film. I think everyone in it is great. But Anthony Hopkins, my god.

[19:18] J.J.: It's one of my favorite performances of his.

[19:22] Olaf: The whole final act of that movie, every time.

[19:26] J.J.: Niagara Falls.

[19:27] Olaf: The whole final act at the party.

[19:29] J.J.: Yeah.

[19:29] Olaf: Yeah.

[19:30] J.J.: It's amazing.

[19:30] Olaf: Okay.

[19:31] J.J.: The music, Thomas Newman.

[19:33] Olaf: Stop.

[19:33] J.J.: Amazing.

[19:36] Olaf: It's so good. I can listen to that all the time.

[19:39] J.J.: And there's two different themes that play throughout that movie. Tugs on the heart strings.

[19:43] Olaf: It's fantastic. Do yourself a favor. If you haven't seen Meet Joe Black, check it out. It is my favorite romance film.

[19:53] J.J.: I think there's more people that have seen this movie than you might think.

[19:56] Olaf.: I guess. I just... It always seems like no one knows what I'm talking about. So it's always stuck with me.

[20:03] J.J.: It's so quotable. There's so many lines from it. Because I tend to romanticize a lot of things in my life.

[20:09] Olaf: Sure.

[20:09] J.J.: And a lot of the lines from that film just speak to me so deeply. Pair that with Thomas Newman's score and Niagara Falls.

[20:21] Olaf: Yeah.

[20:22] J.J.: That's a good one.

[20:23] Olaf: That's a great movie.

[20:24] J.J.: Yeah. It's one of my absolute faves. So definitely go out and see it if you haven't.

[20:34] Olaf: So, moving on. We are at question number eight.

[20:48] J.J.: Number eight. What was Paul Newman's last live action film?

[20:55] Olaf: Okay. See, I feel like this one I've got you.

[21:00] J.J.: You might have me on this one.

[21:01] Olaf: Oh!

[21:02] J.J.: Or you don't.

[21:04] Olaf: Well, the movie that comes to mind... And here's the thing. The first movie that came to mind is Nobody's Fool. That came out in 94 with Bruce Willis and Melanie Griffith. But that's way off because he did stuff after that, obviously.

[21:16] J.J.: But the movie that now pops into my head that I'm going to go with as my answer. Because I'm so focused now on this particular film that I don't know if it's anything else. Because I can't think of anything else past this. So the movie I'm thinking of is based, if I'm not mistaken, on a graphic novel starring Tom Hanks, directed by Sam Mendes. Also starring Jude Law and Daniel Craig.

[21:43] Olaf: But the movie that I'm thinking of, and I think I'm wrong, but I'm going to confidently go out on a limb and say Road to Perdition.

[21:50] J.J.: And the answer is... Road to Perdition was his last live-action film.

[21:56] Olaf: Right. Because he did Cars.

[21:58] J.J.: Yeah. Cars came out, I believe, after... Oh, 2006. And after he... I think after he passed away.

[22:04] Olaf: Uh... I don't know. I don't know. That... Oh, I can't... I'm not sure. It was close.

[22:10] J.J.: So are we sure? Are we confident that Road to Perdition was his final live-action film?

[22:16] Olaf: Yes. I am confident in that.

[22:18] J.J.: Okay. I think he was nominated for that.

[22:20] Olaf: Okay. I think he was nominated for an Oscar for that, too.

[22:23] J.J.: I believe you are also correct. Yeah. And he and Tom Hanks actually played that piano bit.

[22:31] Olaf: Fantastic. I really thought I had you on that one. Because Road to Perdition is another film that I don't think got a lot of attention.

[22:41] J.J.: And it's absolutely incredible, especially for fathers and sons.

[22:47] Olaf: It's a very touching film. Tom Hanks is very serious and very...

[22:54] J.J.: Against type.

[22:55] Olaf: Yeah.

[22:56] J.J.: One of the first times he was against type.

[22:57] Olaf: Very reserved. Jude Law was fantastic. Very creepy.

[23:04] J.J.: Daniel Craig plays the...

[23:05] Olaf: Daniel Craig was in it, as well. I mean, it was a great cast. Thomas Newman was the composer for that, as well. And, oh my gosh, the music in that is also just...

[23:16] J.J.: And the little kid ended up becoming Superman on TV. The Lois and Superman...

[23:22] Olaf: Really? Was that him?

[23:23] J.J.: Show on CW. Yeah, that's him.

[23:25] Olaf: Oh, I haven't... I never watched that show.

[23:27] J.J.: I didn't either, but that's him. I mean, that dude, yeah, he grew up and became Superman on TV.

[23:31] Olaf: Wow, good for him. Yeah. He's... As a child performer, he was absolutely fantastic. I mean, that film, the way it's shot, the way everybody performs it is just spot on.

[23:44] J.J.: If you haven't seen Road to Perdition, definitely check it out.

[23:47] Olaf: I found out after the fact that it was actually based off of a graphic novel.

[23:50] J.J.: Yeah.

[23:51] Olaf: But what a... Just incredible. It's a period piece.

[23:55] J.J.: And it looks amazing. And everybody in it's great.

[23:59] Olaf: I'd love to see that again.

[24:00] J.J.: Definitely.

[24:00] Olaf: It's been a while since I've seen that.

[24:02] J.J.: I also really like Sam Mendes. I think he does a lot of great work.

[24:07] Olaf: I agree. He's doing the new Beatles stuff. The Beatles...

[24:10] Olaf: The four Beatles movies, that's him. He's going to be doing those.

[24:13] J.J.: Yeah, I'm definitely very interested in those. The way they're going about it is very out of the box, so be interested to see how that comes together.

[24:25] Olaf: Anyway, we are eight in, and you have gotten every one of them but one. So, very impressed, way to go. Alright, so here we go with question number nine.

[24:40] Olaf: Number nine. What dramatic film stars Matthew Broderick, Carrie Elwes, Morgan Freeman, and Denzel Washington?

[24:50] J.J.: We are definitely in the peaks and valleys, ebbs and flows here. This movie, man, I saw a few times, and I saw it actually in my eighth grade history class. I love this movie. To me, that year of movies that were nominated, it is kind of one of those years where you're kind of like, Driving Miss Daisy won the Oscar, but it was up against Born on the Fourth of July, and it was up against the answer to this question, which is Glory. Is that the answer?

[25:26] Olaf: Yeah.

[25:26] J.J.: He is correct. It is Glory, and I will say right now, to this day, still the greatest Silverwater film ever made.

[25:34] Olaf: That's bold when you think about Gettysburg.

[25:40] J.J.: Terrible.

[25:40] Olaf: And Gods and Generals.

[25:43] J.J.: Gods and Generals, it's okay. Gettysburg is absolutely terrible.

[25:48] Olaf: Wow.

[25:48] J.J.: Yeah. Have you watched it recently?

[25:50] Olaf: Not recently. Not recently.

[25:52] J.J.: It's not good. The makeup and effects are terrible. It's shot poorly. It looks more like an 80s made-for-TV movie or miniseries than an actual film. It's just not done well at all. But if you watch Glory, oh my gosh, they depict everything so well and dynamic and realistic, and it's just fantastic.

[26:19] Olaf: Plus, James Horner and the score.

[26:21] J.J.: That score is unbelievable. I have that score. The Boys Choir of Harlem. It's also one of my father's favorite scores of a film.

[26:31] Olaf: And the cast. You mentioned, it was interesting because I don't know if many people would have ever thought of Matthew Broderick at all. I don't know the ins and outs and the intricacies of how he got cast in this film, but what a bold choice, I think. And he did great.

[26:45] J.J.: He was fantastic. But I don't think I would have thought of him to do it based on... Not that he couldn't handle dramatic stuff, because he clearly can. And even at the time, he could. But he just wasn't known for stretching his chops like that.

[27:01] Olaf: No.

[27:02] J.J.: And for him to be hanging with Denzel and even with Andre Braugher, the late, great Andre Braugher.

[27:09] Olaf: Yes. I didn't want to just read off the whole cast list for this amazing film and amazing cast. I mean, I was weary about even including Denzel Washington in the list, because I thought if he even has an inkling of this movie, then he's going to know.

[27:28] J.J.: That movie is so good. And I feel like, I don't know if people still view it as educational entertainment. Because again, I saw it in my eighth grade history class for that sole purpose. She was like, we're going to watch this movie. Clearly, much like yourself, because this is one of the... This depiction of not only the war, but the regimen.

[27:52] Olaf: 54th?

[27:53] J.J.: Yeah. It was so wonderfully told by everybody in the film and directed beautifully by Edward Zwick, who is, I think, a little underrated as a director overall. That movie is a masterpiece. If you have not seen it, as always, highly recommend it. We are not leading you astray on these movies that we're like, you have to see this.

[28:16] Olaf: No. Going back to the score, James Horner, it's another travesty that he only won one in his lifetime, one Academy Award. He won it for Titanic. He almost didn't even do that movie. But the fact that he... This is a guy who has a filmography of musical scores. You could match it up with just about anybody. But Glory, there was a run there where Glory a couple years later, he was a double nominee for Apollo 13 and Braveheart in '95.

[28:51] J.J.: He's done some Star Trek. Aliens, I mean, right?

[28:58] Olaf: Aliens, by the way, I love the score of Aliens.

[29:02] J.J.: I know. He pulled from his other stuff. He pulled from other...

[29:05] Olaf: Well, he really only did that for the finale. That was only because there was no time or money left to do anything else. But his relationship between him, James Cameron, and Gayle Ann Hurd completely deteriorated. And that was, I believe, their first collaboration. And they never worked together again or really spoke for years until Titanic.

[29:33] J.J.: And unfortunately, he passed away in a tragic accident. But when he is interviewed about Titanic, he has nothing but wonderful things to say about his relationship with Jim and how it over the time, and they both matured and everything. And I was glad that they came together and were able to work together again. No, it's... Like I said, I've got that soundtrack. I've owned that soundtrack for a very long time, the Glory soundtrack. And yeah, the Boys Choir of Harlem, man, it's... Yeah, it's fantastic.

[30:07] Olaf: Fantastic. So give it a listen. Give the movie a watch. You will not be sorry.

[30:14] J.J.: No. It's just incredible. Well, man, already you have nailed eight out of nine questions.

[30:21] Olaf: Have I exceeded your expectations here?

[30:26] J.J.: A little. There were some in here that I was like, yeah, I don't know. I didn't want it to be too hard. And I didn't want it to be too easy. But now I feel like I might have to roll up my sleeves for the next time we do this. But here we go. Question number 10. And at this point, I'm thinking this is probably just a gimme. But here we go. What movie did Tom Hanks earn his first Academy Award nomination?

[30:49] Olaf: Yeah, it's a gimme. And that's okay. I thought so. Because I know you love Tom Hanks.

[30:55] J.J.: Who doesn't? And I know your love for the Oscars.

[31:00] Olaf: Yeah. Oh, no. I've had this conversation with a few people, I think it was most recently as with Johnny, when we were talking about this movie. And it just blows my mind, the nature of the business of acting and the whole thing. When you see somebody in a performance, and you go, yeah. Clearly, it was a no-brainer to cast this person in this particular role, because there's nobody else that possibly could have done what this person has did with this particular role. And then you start to sort of, if you choose, you start to take a dive into that particular movie. And then you realize, oh, Tom Hanks wasn't even like the first, second or third choice to play this particular role. You know, this particular role was offered to Robert De Niro.

And yeah, it was gonna be a very, it would have been a totally, it would have been a very totally different. It would have been interesting. But you think, oh, I don't know if it would have been a totally different movie when you think about him in this particular role. And I've mentioned this before, you know, to people that Tom Hanks, there are two directors early in his career that sort of helped him get back on track. Ron Howard is one of them, and Penny Marshall is the other. And the movie, the answer to this question is Big.

[32:21] Olaf: Yeah. He got his first nomination with Big after clearly they went down the list of actors who either turned it down or didn't feel like they wanted to do it. And it ended up in Tom Hanks's lap. And thank the Lord that it did, because I don't think the movie and it's hard to say, you'll never know, right? We've had this conversation with Indiana Jones, like Tom Selleck as Indiana Jones, but like, I don't see anybody except Tom Hanks playing Josh Baskin in Big.

[32:52] J.J.: I think I would agree with that. I mean, and it's hard because now you're looking at 35 plus years of, it's like, it's him now.

[33:06] Olaf: Yeah. And I can't think of someone in that time period that would have done better. So yeah. Alright. So here we go. That was an easy one. I know not to include Tom Hanks in the Oscars ever again. So here we go. Question number 11, who is the only actor to receive an Oscar nomination for acting in a Lord of the Rings movie?

[33:23] J.J.: Hmm. See, am I overthinking this? Because are we talking about like a specialty type of Oscar? Who is the only actor to receive an Oscar nomination for acting in a Lord of the Rings movie? We're not talking about the Hobbit trilogy. We're talking about Lord of the Rings trilogy because nobody got nominated for the Hobbit trilogy. So.

[33:56] Olaf: Yeah. Did I say the Hobbit?

[33:56] J.J.: You didn't. You didn't. You didn't. I'm thinking here. This is a good one. This is a good one because for the longest time, I've thought nobody got nominated for an acting Academy Award for the Lord of the Rings trilogy. It was a very much a group effort, an ensemble effort, performances aside that they were all sort of on par with each other. How do you single out one person in this series of movies? Having said that, my answer is going to be Ian McKellen.

[34:31] Olaf: Is he correct?

[34:34] J.J.: Ian McKellen was the only actor nominated for an Oscar in a Lord of the Rings movie.

[34:41] Olaf: The third one or the first one?

[34:43] J.J.: Doesn't matter.

[34:44] Olaf: It does. I think the audience, I want to know.

[34:47] J.J.: Well, then go look it up. I don't need to hold your hand for all of this.

[34:53] Olaf: That was, I mean, the more I thought about it, I'm like the only person that they would have singled out would have been him. Maybe Viggo, but I knew he hadn't been nominated for that.

[35:02] J.J.: Well, I appreciate the fact that that almost stumped you, but this next question, I feel like I might have you on.

[35:09] Olaf: Oh, this next one?

[35:12] J.J.: Yeah. We'll see. So here we go. Question number 12. Well, nobody's perfect. Was the final line of what 1959 comedy?

[35:26] Olaf: It's one of those things where you don't want to give the person that you're asking the question too much information because then they might be able to deduce certain things and take things away from the question. And no, I'm not stalling because I don't know the answer. Uh, because this is considered, and I don't know if it's still considered, but for a long time it was considered the number one comedy movie of all time, at least by the American Film Institute. And it's been a while. It's been a while. I mean, there are a lot of comedies that have come out since I think that particular ranking that I'm thinking of. But yeah, and that's a great question anyway. It's a great trivia question because it's a quote and there are quotes, you know, clearly you could quote millions of movies.

[36:16] Olaf: Isn't that quote in a million films?

[36:18] J.J. Gonzalez: Yes, but the quote you're referring to or the movie you're referring to is Some Like It Hot.

[36:24] Olaf: Yes, Some Like It Hot.

[36:26] J.J. Gonzalez: Marilyn Monroe.

[36:28] Olaf: Tony Curtis, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon.

[36:32] J.J. Gonzalez: Yeah, everyone was great. The movie's hilarious and it still holds.

[36:37] Olaf: Oh, yeah. I still enjoy sitting down to watch it every once in a while. On Broadway, they made it into a musical just recently.

[36:44] J.J. Gonzalez: Yeah, well, you know, just like Hollywood, Broadway has run out of ideas as well, so they're just turning all movies into musicals. I had a friend who was lucky enough to perform in Mrs. Doubtfire.

[36:56] Olaf: Nice. So didn't you have a friend who was like in the musical once?

[36:59] J.J. Gonzalez: Yes, we got to work together. I was his understudy in a show and had a lot of fun that summer, and then he went on, Steve Kazee, worked on Broadway and won a Tony for his performance in Once.

[37:17] Olaf: Yeah, and then I thought somebody else was on Broadway that you... Grant?

[37:20] J.J. Gonzalez: Grant Gustin.

[37:23] Olaf: Yeah, Grant Gustin, formerly The Flash on the CW. I've performed in a handful of shows with him while he was a lot younger, and great family. He was always super talented. I think he's on Broadway right now.

[37:37] J.J. Gonzalez: Water for Elephants.

[37:39] Olaf: Water for Elephants, or he was. Yeah, couldn't be more proud to see his success and to have been able to work with him and have the fun that we did during that time.

[37:49] J.J. Gonzalez: But yeah, so great job on...

[37:52] Olaf: Well, nobody's perfect quote.

[37:55] J.J. Gonzalez: Geez, I'm really gonna have to step up my game as far as the next time we do this.

[38:01] Olaf: Who's that? Was that the last question?

[38:05] J.J. Gonzalez: No. Oh, what are you, cocky now? You like to end on a high note?

[38:22] Olaf: So, here we go. Question number 13. This might also be a gimme. Who wrote the music to Halloween?

[38:31] J.J. Gonzalez: The original? Yes, okay, the 1978 Jamie Lee Curtis horror movie Halloween.

[38:39] Olaf: So...

[38:41] J.J. Gonzalez: I'm not a big horror... it's not my genre. However, I feel like I... I don't know if I'm right or not, but I don't know why I think this, but I'm gonna go ahead and answer it anyway. This is my answer. I feel like John Carpenter did the music for Halloween.

[38:58] Olaf: Yes, that is correct. John Carpenter, the director of Halloween, was also the composer for the music for the film. He's actually written a lot of music for his films. I also really love, even though it's really subtle and not big or flashy, is the music to The Thing.

[39:18] J.J. Gonzalez: See, what a lot of people can't see is when I'm unsure about an answer and then I get it right, I am arms in the air celebrating because sometimes I'm just not quite sure, but maybe I am a little, and so there it was.

[39:33] Olaf: At this point, I'm really ashamed of you for not getting the Judy Garland.

[39:37] J.J. Gonzalez: I know, it is the eyesore of my test score at the moment. Yeah, so here we go with number 14, okay? Question 14: Who was the singing voice for Jack Skellington in The Nightmare Before Christmas?

[39:55] Olaf: What's this? Can we just talk about how great this movie is just for a moment before I give my answer? I love The Nightmare Before Christmas. I'm obsessed with the music. I didn't see it for a really long time. Like, it came out when I was in high school, and I didn't see it for years. For some reason, I was just like, "I'm not gonna see this movie," and then it became this sort of everlasting ongoing cult—not even a cult now. It's just like a family. It's just like in the rotation of movies every year. What an amazing film that almost didn't get made, and there's that special like how movies were made, and that's one of them.

[40:33] J.J. Gonzalez: Yeah, and when it came to the music, and I love this composer too, Danny Elfman is the composer of this movie, and like he was composing music, and they needed somebody due to the singing voice for Jack because it was the voiceover for Jack is Chris Sarandon, Prince Humperdinck from The Princess Bride. He does the voice of Jack Skellington, but he does not do the singing voice. The singing voice is done by Danny Elfman, who's the composer of the movie.

[41:01] Olaf: Yes, I don't think the original plan was for Danny Elfman to be the vocalist for it. It wasn't going to... I think he was really just kind of putting down temp tracks, and they were out of time.

[41:09] J.J. Gonzalez: Yeah, and they just went with it.

[41:16] Olaf: And he's brilliant. Thank God they did. It's one of those things where I think animated films do a really good job of if the voiceover actor isn't going to be doing the singing, they do a really good job of finding a singer that somewhat matches. Every once in a while, you'll get a movie where the singer doesn't match the actor doing the voice. Yeah, but this one, flawless.

[41:39] J.J. Gonzalez: It was great. You would never know that it wasn't Chris Sarandon or that it wasn't Danny Elfman doing the actual voice of the character.

[41:46] Olaf: Yeah, absolutely seamless between the two and just an amazing soundtrack, an amazing film. And I was the same like you. I don't... I think a lot of people didn't rush out and see this when it first came out, and it's become this cult classic. Honestly, it's probably beyond a cult. I think I'm saying it's now... it's sort of in the... I think home video had a lot to do with it. I think it was ahead—it was clearly ahead of its time, and then it sort of kind of found a new audience over the last 30 years.

[42:16] J.J. Gonzalez: All right, so we are at our final question. You've gotten 13 of 14 correct? That's pretty good. Now, let me ask you this: when you were making this list up, when you were putting it together, were you thinking he'll probably get maybe 10 out of 15 or 11? Where did you think we'd be at at this point?

[42:40] Olaf: No idea. I thought maybe you would get a few more wrong, that maybe I threw in some hard ones, but I underestimated your knowledge.

[42:49] J.J. Gonzalez: Well, again, that Alien vs. Predator vs. Terminator question was like so far... I'm walking away going that question could have gotten me.

[43:00] Olaf: Well, because that one's arguable. But Lance Henriksen wasn't because you pulled an actor from an Alien movie that a lot of people don't consider. I mean, I don't know. Hey, I would say it was a great question. They're all good questions, but that was, to me, that was a great question.

[43:12] J.J. Gonzalez: Well, thank you. I was trying to come up with some good ones that were challenging, and for the most part, they seem pretty easy for you, so it was nice that I got a couple of.

[43:25] Olaf: All right, so here is our final question of our Back to the Movie Theater trivia night, number 15. What is the bride's real name in the movie Kill Bill?

[43:34] J.J. Gonzalez: That is a fantastic question. I'm gonna get back to you on that. Now, we were talking to—I can't remember who we were talking with recently. Oh, I know exactly who we were talking with, but I won't throw this person under the bus—who hadn't seen Kill Bill one or two yet. And if I had to go with Tarantino, those are two of my favorite Tarantino. I mean, I guess I'll consider it one movie, the Kill Bill movie, you know, double feature is probably like some of my favorite Tarantino, and I love Pulp Fiction, you know, and I'm really hoping that he makes a Kill Bill 3 because we're now 20 plus years outside of the last one where they could conceivably do it.

[44:14] Olaf: I'm not sure he's going to.

[44:20] J.J. Gonzalez: I don't think he is either. He's planning on retiring.

[44:24] Olaf: Yeah, I think he's got... he said he wants to do 10 movies, and he's already got whatever his 10th film is. But you know people, they don't retire.

[44:30] J.J. Gonzalez: So to answer your question, because I love what they do throughout the whole movie, and if you haven't seen it, I'm not gonna spoil anything in relation to the plot or anything, but every time they mention her name, for some reason they bleep it out, if I'm correct. So you never really get her name. But I guess it's sort of told at the end with Bill. My answer for this question is Beatrix Kiddo.

[44:55] Olaf: Solid. Beatrix Kiddo is correct. You know, it just rolls off the tongue so nicely, Beatrix Kiddo. If you're kind of going, "How did you? Why did you know that?" I thought maybe I would get you on that one, but once again, I was wrong.

[45:17] J.J. Gonzalez: See, but here's the thing about trivia, I think, and I don't know—you hosted trivia. You've done it a lot for me. I don't know how I would hold up with... I feel like I've got a pretty good general knowledge of movie trivia. Maybe I know more than I think I do, but it's always a lot of fun because I've always told people I've got a lot of... there's a lot of useless information rattling up here when it comes to these sorts of things.

[45:41] Olaf: Well, I think you've impressed everyone today. 15 questions, 14 correct.

[45:52] J.J. Gonzalez: But now I've opened up the door to like somebody to, you know, start throwing out trivia questions of their own because that would be really cool for people to sort of get involved that way.

[46:01] Olaf: I hope that I gave people—and if people decided to, if they wanted to play along, I hope I gave people enough time to navigate an answer. I hope I didn't take too long before I gave my answer, but...

[46:09] J.J. Gonzalez: Well, Johnny'll edit out the long pauses.

[46:18] Olaf: He will. He'll edit out the gaps. That was fun though, and I was excited about it. So yeah, I thought it was a lot of fun. I hope everybody at home had a fun time, and I hope that this won't be the last time we do movie trivia here on this pod.

[46:33] J.J. Gonzalez: Can you imagine if you would put Judy Garland at the very end and I was sitting on a... felt like batting a thousand, and then I just come out and I'm like, "She was 14," and you'd have been like, "You're wrong."

[46:45] Olaf: It would have made up for everything else. I would have left feeling triumphant.

[46:52] J.J. Gonzalez: Well, how are you gonna know? I mean, you put that question in number two, and I answered so confidently that when I got it wrong, I was thinking, "Oh great, yeah, I just got the second question wrong." And I didn't have any idea how many questions you were gonna ask. I thought it was gonna be 10, but it was nice to know that it was more than that. So I was thinking, "Oh man," and then I think the next question was the Alien vs. Terminator. I was like, "Oh, what?"

[47:11] Olaf: Good stuff. And then after that, it was smooth sailing for you until we got to The Lord of the Rings.

[47:18] J.J. Gonzalez: Yeah, and you still got that right. So great job, and great job to everybody at home. I hope you had fun. I'm waving to everybody at home. Tell my family and my friends, thank you. Thank you.

[47:31] Olaf: That does it for another episode here of Back to the Movie Theater with J.J. and Olaf. We hope you had fun, and we'll see you next time. To be continued.
