[0:11] J.J.: I was also doing that. We first had the Atari 2500.

[0:16] J.J.: And then 85 rolled around and I got a Nintendo. We had it, my brother and I had a Nintendo, and I had the original Game Boy, and then we had the Super Nintendo. And then we had the 500. That was the first one. And then we had the 300. And then we had the Super NES. We had the Super Nintendo. And then that was it. As I got into late high school, college, Johnny had the 64. And so in college, we would play 64. We would play Mario Kart 64 and NBA Jam and all that. But that was it. So I was never a PlayStation guy or Sega guy. But yeah, as a kid, video games, man. Absolutely. I was huge into video games. I loved video games. And the first gaming system we had, it was the Sega Master System. And now PlayStation. I don't play video games nearly as much now, but when I do, I still get into it. When I was a kid, they had like a video game competition in the city.

[1:11] Olaf: Did you do the competition?

[1:12] J.J.: Yeah, I did it. My brother, my cousin, yeah. It was all for fun because it basically, it's how many points you can rack up in a certain game and then they would eliminate and whatnot. And my cousin, the second year we did it, was like the, he won like second place, but he also had the highest something. He got a trophy. It was pretty cool.

[1:30] Olaf: That's cool. I never did anything like that.

[1:32] J.J.: Yeah, it was very cool. It was very much like The Wizard, which we've talked about before in other episodes.

[1:36] Olaf: Yes, and speaking of movies that are attached to games, that brings us to today's topic.

[1:43] J.J.: We're going to be doing things a little different today, but we're gonna be doing a ranking of video game movies. So before we get into any of it, let's go back to the movie theater.

[2:14] Olaf: Hey guys, welcome back to the movie theater. It's me, it's Olaf, it's JJ, and we've got another rank list coming at you, but we are going to be doing things differently. We listened to our fans and our fans have reached out and here's what we're going to do. Instead of a top 20, we're gonna do a top 10, but we're both bringing our own top 10 list to the table and we will compete and decide who has the better list at the end.

[2:43] J.J.: I like this idea. Like you said, it allows us to both participate and have not only an opinion on the other person's list, but to then be able to back it up with a list of their own. I think this is a cool format. Hopefully we'll see how it goes. Hopefully everybody listening will also enjoy it as well. Obviously based off of the conversation we were having prior to jumping in in the movie theater, this is going to be a list of movies that are based off of video games. That's what we are doing today. All of the movies that we mentioned are movies strictly based on video games.

[3:19] Olaf: Okay, so I'm hoping then looking at my list that I'm successfully following those parameters. But we'll see. Now, I will let you know, Tron is not on the list. Last Starfighter. Something like Tron. I actually had three movies that I wanted to mention that are not gonna make the list because they are not based on a video game. And those were Gran Turismo.

[3:44] J.J.: That's based off of a game.

[3:48] Olaf: No, it's not. It's based off of a real life event of people playing video games and becoming F1 drivers.

[3:57] J.J.: It is not, we're just turning.

[4:00] Olaf: I would still put that on my list.

[4:02] J.J.: Well, you'll have to cross it off now because it doesn't qualify because it's not based on a video game. It's just based on an event surrounding a video game.

[4:09] Olaf: And then Free Guy, starring Ryan Reynolds. It takes place in a video game world, but it's not based on any actual video game that we have that's out there.

[4:16] J.J.: But what a fun movie it is.

[4:24] Olaf: Yeah, like I had mentioned, Tron obviously is not gonna be on this list.

[4:29] J.J.: Yeah, Tron's great.

[4:30] Olaf: And or Last Starfighter.

[4:33] J.J.: Yeah.

[4:34] Olaf: It's got that sort of video game element. Well, this will be interesting because there may be some holes poked into my list, but maybe not. I don't know because prisoner of the moment. I would have definitely had, and again, we're talking a movie, so I know this is not gonna be on either one of our lists, the show Fallout.

[4:53] J.J.: Oh, yeah. If we were doing TV shows, Fallout, absolutely, yeah.

[4:58] Olaf: Last of Us, yeah, part of it would make the list. But, yeah, season one would make the list.

[5:08] J.J.: Yeah, but unfortunately those are not movies, so they do not count. But man, are they, or at least Fallout is fantastic. Season one of Last of Us was really good.

[5:18] Olaf: So, JJ, now that we've gone over the parameters, how are you feeling?

[5:23] J.J.: It was hard to put together a list of top 10 movies based off video games, just because I just never been that excited about a lot of films that are made off of video games. So this list was challenging for me to find a top 10. Honestly, I struggled to make a top 10.

[5:41] Olaf: I know.

[5:43] J.J.: I had to add some movies that I'm not crazy about because video game movies are mostly bad. And spoiler alert right now, Uwe Boll does not make my list.

[5:56] Olaf: Okay.

[5:57] J.J.: Because he made a lot of video game movies and they're all terrible. Just putting that out there. I don't have any honorable mentions. I've got none of that. I've just got like-

[6:09] Olaf: I don't have an honorable mention.

[6:11] J.J.: I just, I do have a movie that is technically number 11. I guess that would be an honorable mention, maybe.

[6:18] Olaf: Yeah.

[6:19] J.J.: Okay. I've got a feeling that one of my movies may not qualify. It may get like the, but it's still on this list because I, what do I know?

[6:28] Olaf: Okay. Well, we'll find out.

[6:31] J.J.: Having said that, let's get started. Let's do this. JJ, what is your number 10?

[6:38] J.J.: My number 10 is a movie that's not that old. It just came out a couple of years ago. It's Five Nights at Freddy's. I didn't see it in the theater. I was a presenter to the streaming. My son and I watched it. I wasn't overly familiar with the game itself. It's a phone app game. Insanely popular and popular enough to make a movie. Side note, I actually auditioned for this movie as the dude in the cab, the cab driver. Didn't get it. They went in a totally different direction. That was another thing that prompted me like, oh, well I'll watch this because I want to see who they went with and whatnot. So that's my number 10. It's, you know, it's Josh Hutcherson. Of the Hunger Games fame. Matthew Lillard's in it.

Overall, it's done well. It's entertaining. This is how we'll be describing a lot of these movies. Where we're just trying to think of good things to say. Well like, you know, based on the budget, it made its money. It was clearly, they made a sequel. I mean, I'm pretty sure they're making another one. But that is my number 10, Five Nights at Freddy's.

[7:39] Olaf: Yeah, I've never seen it. I didn't have any interest. I played the game once or twice and couldn't get into it.

[7:45] J.J.: Okay, my number 10 came out in 2006. It was based on a horror video game called Silent Hill. 2006, Radha Mitchell, Laurie Holden, and Sean Bean are in this movie. Yeah, it's a creepy movie. It's a creepy video game. They have a lot of elements from the game in it. And it looks a lot like the game. The movie was okay. I mean, you gotta really be into like horror and stuff to enjoy it because it gets pretty creepy. The Rotten Tomatoes of this movie is 33%, but the audience score is 63%.

[8:24] J.J.: That's a big jump.

[8:25] Olaf: Yeah, people go see video game movies if they've played the game.

[8:28] J.J.: Yeah, so that is my number 10.

[8:31] Olaf: Okay, now let's, I mean, you know, here we go. I don't know about my number, I question my number nine. My number nine is Mortal Kombat, the 2021 version of Mortal Kombat. Not the original OG 95. If you know me, you know I think that movie is complete garbage. The soundtrack is amazing. The movie is trash. So when the 2021 version came out, I was fortunate enough that I got to see it at home because this was the year that I believe, I think it's Warner Brothers. Yeah, Warner Brothers. HBO was releasing stuff at the same time. They released all of their movies. They streamed all of their new releases in 2021 because of the COVID and whatnot. So I was like, great, I can watch this at home. I'm gonna do it.

And I was pleasantly surprised because I knew that from a production standpoint, from a budget standpoint, it wasn't gonna be total cheese factor like the original. They were gonna try and maybe ground it a little bit. It wasn't gonna feel so video gamey, but I enjoyed the movie comparatively speaking because I didn't like the first one and the second one was total garbage. A new attempt at making this movie was serviceable to make my number nine, which is interesting because normally, and I may not say this a lot, but normally I would be doing a top 20. So who knows? Like the fact that we're splitting this up between the two of us, it makes it a lot easier. And even then this was challenging. My number nine is 2021's Mortal Kombat.

[10:05] Olaf: Yay! We have the same one at number nine.

[10:07] J.J.: Oh man, Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 55%, but the audience score, 85%.

[10:18] Olaf: Okay.

[10:19] J.J.: Another big jump between the critics and the audience.

[10:22] Olaf: Yeah. Yeah, like you, I watched this at home when it came out and I was excited for it because unlike you, I was a fan of the original.

[10:30] J.J.: Oh, I know.

[10:31] Olaf: I thought overall it was enjoyable and it was good, but it didn't like blow my hair back. It didn't get me super pumped.

[10:36] J.J.: Well, it is missing the music. There were things about it that I was like, meh, that's why it's number nine because it was just okay. The music of the original is amazing. The music of the original makes the original Mortal Kombat, you can stomach it a little bit because at least you know you've got this music surrounded by all of this awfulness of acting and special effects. It's just, we're not here to trash the original Mortal Kombat. I'm just saying the remake at least tried to, I don't know, ground it a little bit or make it not so cheese factor for me. However, speaking of cheese factor, as I say all of that, my number eight is 1994's Street Fighter. Now this movie is not good.

[11:21] Olaf: No.

[11:22] J.J.: At all. But I wanted to throw a little love to the 90s because our generation, that's where we're like video game movies. I mean, there was maybe some in the 80s, but this movie came out a year before Mortal Kombat and this movie's not good, but I know that a new one is on its way or it's probably already out by the time you listen to this and I've got a feeling it's gonna blow it out of the water. I think it's gonna be really good. This version of it is my number eight and a lot of it is because of Raul Julia. His last movie. He was the only good part of it. He was an amazing actor who did some amazing things and was sick at the time of this movie. And I think did it for his kids. So there's a lot of that because the movie itself is hard to watch. It's hard to stomach. It is not good.

[12:10] Olaf: It's not.

[12:13] J.J.: And the fact that it's number eight.

[12:16] Olaf: I know. And I gotta tell you, you know what would have been sitting at number eight? Gran Turismo. Gran Turismo would have been at number eight.

[12:20] J.J.: That's a shame that that doesn't qualify.

[12:25] Olaf: I know. I would have probably, Gran Turismo, I love Gran Turismo. It was a good movie.

[12:29] J.J.: Yeah, it's a shame it wasn't based on a video game.

[12:33] Olaf: Okay, wow. I feel real good about my number eight then. My number eight came out in 2002 starring Mila Jovovich in Resident Evil.

[12:46] J.J.: Yes.

[12:47] Olaf: The original Resident Evil. Honestly, it's the only good Resident Evil movie. Mila Jovovich, she's awesome. And she's great in the role. I've always had a huge crush on her.

[12:57] J.J.: Yeah, so this movie is, you're gonna show up on mine as well. Spoiler.

[13:01] Olaf: But you just not like the other movies.

[13:04] J.J.: They're terrible. They do get worse. I was a big Resident Evil fan. At the time, I was just absolutely in love with Resident Evil 2. Played that all the time. It was so good. Super creepy, super fun. So when this movie came out, I was very excited. And it captures a lot of elements from the game. It doesn't really stick to the games much. They already sort of go in their own direction anyway. But not too much where you can say, ah yeah, Resident Evil.

[13:34] Olaf: But after this, oh my gosh, they're just like, we're doing our own thing.

[13:38] J.J.: Well, yeah. Resident Evil in name only. And her character, and like her character's name. That's about it.

[13:46] Olaf: Yeah, I really enjoyed this movie. The rest of them, I've watched. I have not seen all of them. I watched a few more after this and they just continually got worse and dumber. It was hard to keep up because, is she alive? Then they bring her back and then like.

[14:02] J.J.: Rotten Tomatoes score for Resident Evil is 36%, but the audience score is 67%.

[14:10] Olaf: Yeah, we're looking at a big divide between critics and fans on all these movies.

[14:15] J.J.: So far. Yeah, that does not surprise me. Yeah. Alright, hit us with your number 7. My number 7 is 2018 Tomb Raider. Now, the original Tomb Raiders with Angelina Jolie, the first one is okay. The second one I saw in the theater and I don't know if I've ever been as uninterested as I've ever been watching a movie. I was in that movie watching Cradle of Life and I was sitting there going, I don't care about anything or anyone in this movie. I remember leaving the theater going, this movie was not good. So, when they came out with the new one with Alicia Vikander, first of all, huge fan of Alicia Vikander, I was like, okay, well, this looks interesting. Walton Goggins is the bad guy. This is fun.

And Frost is kind of this little cameo. I really enjoyed it. I was wishing it had done better because they were trying to make that a new sort of franchise and it just didn't do well because I think now they're rebooting it as a series. Sansa Stark? Oh, yes. Sophie Turner. Yeah, I'll watch that. With Angelina Jolie, you could tell in the time it was made, early 2000s, the style, you know, the very stylistic where the 2018 with Alicia Vikander, it almost feels like an Indiana Jones but without the decent script, right? It's like, we're going to go into the jungles and we're going to do all these things and we're going to try to have this adventure. At this point, the last two Indiana Jones fall into that category. My number seven also came out in 2018 and it is called Tomb Raider.

[16:04] Olaf: Yeah, I have the 2018 Tomb Raider as number seven. They had already come out with a new video game version of Lara Croft and it was way more grounded. It was grittier, very more Indiana Jones-y. So, when they announced this movie, I'm like, yeah, okay, cool. It's going to lean more towards that version of the video game. The movie was okay. It was serviceable. Alicia Vikander is great in it. I would have liked to have seen her do more. The Rotten Tomatoes score, 52%.

[16:35] J.J.: It's better than 33?

[16:36] Olaf: Yeah. The audience score, 55.

[16:41] J.J.: Really? But still made number seven. I mean, considering you had Street Fighter at number eight, I mean, it's pretty easy to make a number seven. The bar is low.

[16:48] Olaf: As we get into the top part of my list, there might be some question marks from a lot of people. Alright, so that brings us now to number six. We are at the bottom of the top five of our top ten. My number six is 2016 Assassin's Creed.

[17:00] J.J.: Okay. To be honest with you, I think I played the game once. Going into the movie, I didn't know that much about the game to have any sort of opinion about whether or not the movie itself was true to the game or it left things out. But from a story standpoint, the fact that they had Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard in this movie, I was like, you guys managed to wrangle up some quality acting for this video game movie. And then I watched the movie. I was like, this is actually a pretty cool story. As someone who did play the video games, the Assassin's Creed games, they're varied. You've got some hits and you got some misses. And when they hit, oh man, do they hit. They're so good. So when this movie was announced and you see Michael Fassbender, you're like, oh man, this is it.

This is going to be one of those hits. It's so rare that people get a video game right in a movie. And this did not. It is terrible. It's boring. It's terrible. And it has not a ton to do with the games. It's just it was a big disappointment.

[18:20] Olaf: I OK. And again, I didn't play the game. And maybe that's why it's higher on my list, because I was like this movie. I enjoyed the movie.

[18:24] J.J.: Yeah. But if you like the story so much, that means that you would probably enjoy the games since that's sort of what they're basing it off of. It's not like Street Fighter bad.

[18:33] Olaf: You played the game.

[18:34] J.J.: It's well, no, but it really misses the mark as far as the video game goes. And it's kind of lifeless. It's kind of boring and lifeless. It's it was a disappointment.

[18:48] Olaf: Yeah, for sure. OK, so, yeah, Assassin's Creed made your number six. Wow. Is it just because it's Michael Fassbender and he's done other better movies?

[19:04] J.J.: Well, this now this came out in 2016. So it's 10 years old. He was already kind of on a bit of a tear in a good way doing a lot of stuff. So when they announced that he was going to be doing it, I was like, what are you doing in this movie? Like, what are you doing in a video? That's why I'm like, is he only is this movie Assassin's Creed at number six only for his prestige and not for what the movie was?

[19:31] Olaf: Maybe a little bit like the cachet of who Michael Fassbender is and was then did that attract me? Does that mean that might have something to do with why it is where I mean, I know that side of the tracks, so.

[19:40] J.J.: That's right. I got Alicia Vikander, not Angelina. I got Michael Fassbender. Well, let's get to my number six and my number six. This movie came out 2001. It is Lara Croft Tomb Raider starring Angelina Jolie.

[20:03] Olaf: At least not in the top five.

[20:04] J.J.: It did not make the top five, but it slightly beat out Alicia Vikander's because, yes, it was of its time, but man, did it lean into not only the 2000s, but it leaned into the gaming world of that style. And so I can understand why it's there. And I can understand why as we move closer to moving to your top five, why some movies are going to be there that I had to think about it for a while to figure out which is better, the Angelina Jolie or Alicia Vikander. And it was the first Angelina Jolie movie because it's so fun and stylized and it captures the video game. John Voight plays her dad in the movie also.

[20:50] Olaf: Yeah. Like at the beginning.

[20:51] J.J.: Which did we need? Not really.

[20:56] Olaf: Well, I mean, it was the only thing they've ever been in together.

[20:58] J.J.: It was more fun than Alicia Vikander's and it just.

[21:04] Olaf: Well, yes. So overall, I had to give it the one spot higher.

[21:07] J.J.: I get you. I mean, it is it's like 2001. This is like Charlie's Angels era, that style, the flits. And this movie was based on those earlier games. Maybe it's my other side of the tracks.

[21:18] Olaf: Yeah, I can't. Rotten Tomatoes has Lara Croft Tomb Raider at twenty one percent.

[21:27] J.J.: OK, still a fair, a decent gap between the critics and the audience. The audience score is forty seven percent.

[21:33] Olaf: Doesn't even crack to 50, 50.

[21:34] J.J.: Wow. But it's fun. It is a stupid fun movie based on a video game. So I'm going to I'm going to take it over the newer one just for fun.

[21:51] Olaf: Alright. Well, here we are. Top top five. My number five is a movie that's already been on your list, and that is 2002's Resident Evil.

[22:05] J.J.: Wow. OK, it cracked my top five for a lot of the reasons we've already talked about. I mean, do the subsequent sequels hurt it? I mean, no. I mean, they just if we're solely talking about a movie based on a video game, this is what Resident Evil tried to do. They tried to make a movie strictly based off the video game. They do a really good job of doing that. I think she's wonderfully cast as this character, Alice. You get all of those elements. Then, yes, sure. They try to cash in and make eight other movies after this or seven other movies after this. But the first one, I feel good about having it right there at five.

[22:36] Olaf: I'm not going to fault you for being in your top five. Not at all, because I do enjoy that movie.

[22:41] J.J.: I do. I want my Resident Evil to be higher on the list.

[22:47] Olaf: Yeah, a little.

[22:48] J.J.: But, you know, I had to.

[22:49] Olaf: You could have.

[22:50] J.J.: I could have, but I'm OK with where it's at, too, based on the rest of my list, which I got to say, when I got into the top five, I was a little surprised at how things turned out.

[23:05] Olaf: Well, I've got a feeling I won't be, but maybe you will surprise me as well. I've got a feeling I've got we're going to be in store for some questionable movies in your top.

[23:11] J.J.: I don't know. We'll see. We'll see. I might surprise you.

[23:17] Olaf: But my number five, you're number five Resident Evil. I'm OK with that. My number five is definitely a lesser known video game. And when I saw this movie, I didn't even know it was based on a video game. So when I was making this list and it kept coming up, I was like, oh, this is this is based off a video game. OK. Wow. OK. They must have done a good job because I enjoyed it and it made my top five. My top five is your number five.

[23:51] J.J.: Yeah. Number five. Two thousand twenty one's Werewolves Within. It is a comedy. I've seen it stars Sam Richardson and Milana Vantrub, who is famously known for the AT&T commercials.

[24:01] Olaf: Oh, yes. Yes.

[24:10] J.J.: It's just one of these movies that I just happened to find on streaming and I watched it. It's funny. It's entertaining. I just thought it was just another funny werewolf movie. And it's in your top five. I mean, that's pretty good because it's really good. I recommend people. I actually recommend people watch this movie.

[24:26] Olaf: It beat out Tomb Raider.

[24:27] J.J.: I know. Yeah. So that yeah, that's my top five. The Rotten Tomatoes score is eighty six percent.

[24:39] Olaf: Wow. Look at that. That's the highest rated one so far.

[24:46] J.J.: And then the audience score is 80 percent. So people like this movie. It's fun. It's funny. That's what another reason why we love doing this is because I've never seen it. So based on what you're telling me, I'd be interested in taking a look at it.

[25:01] Olaf: So hopefully there are other people out there as well that are like either have seen it and are on the same train that you're on. We're just like, yes, I recommend this movie to people also or they haven't seen. It's definitely worth a watch if you're a fan of werewolves, if you're a fan of video games, both parties are going to like it. That's my number five.

[25:15] J.J.: Alright. Here's my number four. Twenty twenty two Uncharted. Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg. Was I a prisoner to the adventure element of it and to the casting? Probably. I think it's a fun movie. And that's what's one of those other things, too, where it's like it wasn't based off a video game. It's still a great. This is like this is. Oh, this is just another sort of this generation's adventure movie.

[25:37] Olaf: Well, not all. I'm not impressed at all.

[25:44] J.J.: Either I can't believe it.

[25:45] Olaf: Or I do not like his number four.

[25:52] J.J.: Oh, not as it's awful. It's so poorly cast. It's such a cookie.

[25:57] J.J.: Cutter, hollow, empty movie. And I surprised you.

[26:01] Olaf: Yeah, I'm not. This is this is you sticking your nose up.

[26:08] J.J.: I can't. I can't believe it. I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if you'd put it on your top ten list based on what we're doing today. But the fact that made your number four spot, it's so awful and it has so little to do with the actual games, which are amazing, by the way. The Uncharted games are so good.

[26:25] Olaf: Yeah, it's one of these things where, like, are they going to make another one? Is this happening? I know these guys are insanely busy. I think that the plan was to make more, but I hope they don't because this was awful. I couldn't even I don't even think I could finish it. It was so bad.

[26:39] J.J.: Yeah, terrible. And don't get me wrong. I love Tom Holland, but Drake, he is not.

[26:49] Olaf: Oh my gosh.

[26:50] J.J.: And Mark Wahlberg is Sully. Not even close.

[26:57] Olaf: Oh my gosh. Not even. Not even. Not even close. The most he had the mustache at the end.

[27:07] J.J.: No, no way. No way that the games are so good. If you can play them, play them. They are so good. But the movie. Oh, boy. What a cheap cash grab.

[27:21] Olaf: Well, and that's the other thing, too, is that they released it. What, in the beginning of twenty two? I don't even know if they were able to grab the cash. People still recovering from, you know, COVID and all that. It's not going back to the theater.

[27:26] J.J.: Wow. I can't believe that's on your fourth spot.

[27:30] Olaf: Wow. See, my number four, at least it's good and it's well, it's accurate to the games. To some extent, it's way more in line with the video game.

[27:41] Olaf: My number four is 1995's Mortal Kombat.

[27:51] J.J.: And I think I think everything that has has been already said about this movie soundtrack is crazy. This movie is so fun.

[27:57] J.J.: Christopher Lambert is so good.

[28:05] Olaf: No, he's not. Christopher Lambert is great in Highlander, period. He is not good.

[28:11] J.J.: And Bridget Wilson, everything else is not good. The dude who plays Johnny Cage is terrible.

[28:23] J.J.: And here's the thing. I, for whatever reason, I don't know what kind of backwards you don't like.

[29:08] J.J.: Starting off with number ten, I have "Detective Pikachu." It’s a fun ride for both Pokémon fans and newcomers.

[29:14] Olaf: Great choice! I love how it blends live-action with animation. My number ten is "Tomb Raider" from 2018. Alicia Vikander really brought Lara Croft to life.

[30:14] J.J.: Classic! Moving on to number six, I have "Doom." It’s not perfect, but it has its moments.

[30:25] Olaf: I went with "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within." It was ahead of its time with the animation.

[30:35] J.J.: That’s a unique choice! For number five, I picked "Pokémon: The First Movie." It’s a nostalgic favorite.

[30:46] Olaf: Great pick! My number five is "The Angry Birds Movie." It was surprisingly entertaining.

[30:56] J.J.: I didn’t see that one coming! For number four, I have "Rampage." Dwayne Johnson made it a fun watch.
