[0:15] J.J.: And I say my life because it just recently happened. I ran two marathons in the last five years, a Chicago marathon and a New York marathon. That's it.

[0:22] Olaf: I feel like you've been running marathons for a while.

[0:28] J.J.: Well, I've run a lot of—I’ve run a handful of half marathons. So I like, I ran the New York City half. I've just been, yeah, I haven't been going—I mean half measures.

[0:34] Olaf: Yeah, just doing half measures, New York, Vegas, San Antonio, and then a couple other things. But then I did the Chicago marathon and the New York City marathon.

[0:44] J.J.: And I was gonna ask you because I know you're not a runner, but if you had to choose somewhere that you would like to do that and really willingly put yourself through a 26-mile grueling race, is there a specific place either domestically in the country or internationally that you'd go, "Yeah, I would do that. I would run that one."

[1:06] Olaf: Okay, first of all, running just to run, it's not for me.

[1:10] Olaf: Running in a sport or activity or an event, something like that, totally different story because I do love to be active, right? I love to play sports and hike and things like that where running can be involved, and then it's great. I don't even really notice it.

[1:30] Olaf: No, I'll probably never actually do a marathon. But if I did, yeah, I'd want it to be someplace interesting, right? Give me something to look forward to, and it can take your mind off of your body slowly breaking down as you get closer to the finish line.

[1:52] J.J.: And for me, I got finished the New York City Marathon and I remember thinking because I'd always wanted to run that one. I remember crossing the line going, "I'm good. Like I don't need to do this anymore. I fulfilled this one." There are sure there are other ones that would be cool, but I'm good.

[2:09] J.J.: Although having said that, you know, I contradict myself. We got home from New York after running it, and I immediately put myself in the lottery for the Berlin because it was like a year away. I was like, "In a year, I'll be..."

[2:22] J.J.: Yeah, because with Berlin, you get to run through like the Brandenburg Gate and like all of you monumental things and those Sydney—it's like the Sydney Opera House—like these amazing things, landmarks, historical landmarks that you get to run through for me.

[2:36] J.J.: And I have really enjoyed those landmarks, and I've walked so, yeah, through or past those landmarks. And you know what? I found walking past them very enjoyable, just as exciting—a leisurely stroll where I could take it all in. I wasn't in any kind of pain.

[2:55] J.J.: Take a picture because, yeah, I've done enough stunt shows where my body's like, "We're good. We're all right, we're good. We don't need it. We can go visit these places."

[3:06] J.J.: I still love playing sports, even if it's just like pickup games with friends, but my body's very much, "You don't have to." I was just curious because in addition to movies and movies that I love and talking about it, running and doing marathons is another thing that I enjoy and I look forward to doing.

[3:22] J.J.: But you're right, the knees, man, the joints—it's a grind on the joints. And so I'd like to be able to maybe check one or two more off. But I mean, it's a very inspiring.

[3:37] Olaf: So if you only had one that you could do, if someone came up and said, "We've looked at the paperwork and you only can do one more," one, it won't happen. Your body will not let you do it. So you have one opportunity to run one more marathon. Where would it be?

[3:55] J.J.: This is what you're asking me?

[3:59] Olaf: Yeah, top of my head, straight from the hip, I would go Boston.

[4:05] J.J.: I was just thinking, would you do Boston because it's such an iconic marathon or would you want to try someplace more exotic?

[4:12] Olaf: International, if it wasn't Boston, then it would probably be London. It's either one of those, but I would probably go Boston because of how old—I mean, it's like over a hundred years. They've been doing this marathon for over 115 years.

[4:27] Olaf: There's a lot of history there, and I feel like that one, if anything, will be the one that alludes me because it's just qualifying for that is insane. You have to be so fast. Even at my age, it's like I would have to—unless I raised a bunch of money to do it and then like got in as a charity and I raised ten thousand dollars and they're like, "Yeah, you go. You can run now."

[4:49] J.J.: I mean, that's a worthy cause.

[4:54] Olaf: Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. No doubt. I mean, it would be so gratifying to not only be able to run it, but the reason how I was able to do it, no doubt.

[5:02] J.J.: So anyway, we're not here—this is not a running podcast. This is a movie podcast.

[6:05] J.J.: I have now, yes, I have compiled another list.

[6:09] J.J.: Yeah, we are gonna be covering my favorite actor. And so I have put together my top 20 favorite Tom Hanks films.

[6:17] J.J.: But it's a little more—I try to think of it in terms of what he's doing in the film, the character he's playing, how it affects the story. It's all of those things. It's not like this movie is the most popular performance, and so that's why it's number one for me.

[6:32] Olaf: When you are ranking these, are you ranking it based on the quality of the film overall in general, or are you basing it off of his specific performance in the movie?

[6:44] J.J.: Right, and I'm trying to do a little bit of everything. A lot of it, yes, is his performance in the film. And again, he's got like a 50-plus film filmography.

[6:56] J.J.: I've picked my 20.

[7:04] Olaf: Busy guy.

[7:08] J.J.: He's very busy, and he still is, but he's, you know, obviously in the last decade he doesn't do three films a year like actors do when they're younger.

[7:14] J.J.: I will say this before we jump into it because we're about to—I will mention some honorable mentions.

[7:19] Olaf: Oh, we're getting honorable mentions?

[7:24] J.J.: We're gonna—we got—we're gonna get some honorable mentions up front.

[7:31] J.J.: But I've also—these are the performances and films that are on my top 20 are live-action, no animation performances on this list.

[7:35] Olaf: Wow. Okay.

[7:46] J.J.: So yeah, no Toy Story, no Polar Express is not on the top 20.

[7:54] J.J.: I really—I mean, it is motion capture, and he does play six different characters in that movie, but I strictly went 20 live-action performances on this list.

[8:02] Olaf: Okay.

[8:04] J.J.: So I just wanted to be clear because I didn't want—well, I didn't want anybody waiting as I get to the top five going, "Is Toy Story gonna be in the top five now?" or "Yeah, Polar Express off this list."

[8:10] Olaf: Well, I don't know if Polar Express would make the list anyway, but Toy Story definitely.

[8:16] J.J.: So right.

[8:17] Olaf: Yeah, okay.

[8:20] J.J.: So no animated films.

[8:25] J.J.: Because let's be honest, the Toy Story—the Woody character is iconic, and everything he's doing, you know, is brilliant, but it's—I'm watching Woody. I'm watching this animated character.

[8:36] J.J.: Having said that, I'm gonna jump right into my other honorable mentions that did not quite make the top 20.

[8:41] J.J.: Okay, first one being a movie called News of the World. He delivers the news to like people in each town. In every town, he basically goes in there with newspapers and just sort of does that, and then he's—it's his version of Kevin Costner's The Postman, but better because it is a very good movie.

[8:58] J.J.: But then he's tasked with protecting this young girl, and he's trying to get her to someplace safe because people are after her or whatnot. And so it really is this sort of traveling movie.

[9:03] J.J.: The other honorable mention is Saving Mr. Banks where he plays Walt Disney.

[9:09] Olaf: Oh, that didn't make the top 20?

[9:11] J.J.: That did not make the top 20. As he's gotten older, when he plays characters like Mr. Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, which did not make my top 20 list either, and then Saving Mr. Banks, it's really hard—not like people don't play real-life people, but I mean, it's hard. Those are two very hard real-life people to play.

[9:36] J.J.: And he does a serviceable job in both of them.

[9:42] Olaf: Yeah, I thought he did a fantastic job with Mr. Rogers.

[9:46] J.J.: And I thought he did a good serviceable job as Walt in Saving Mr. Banks. It's an excellent movie in general, but I always fault it for its inaccuracies.

[10:05] Olaf: Sure.

[10:06] J.J.: They changed a lot of the actual history of the making of Mary Poppins and that whole thing, and they made it very Hollywood and everything, but it's still great to watch.

[10:16] J.J.: It's just you have to watch it going, "I agree, this isn't very accurate."

[10:19] J.J.: So that is on an honorable mention. And the last honorable mention I'm gonna bring up because I don't want people to be waiting for this one is Turner and Hooch.

[10:24] J.J.: It did not make my top 20.

[10:29] J.J.: Okay, and I love me some Turner, but for me, it's the dynamic between him and the dog is what makes this movie so great.

[10:34] J.J.: But you love the dog, you love Tom Hanks, but you're loving the dog. And at the end and all that, it's really not—to me, when I think of Turner and Hooch, I'm more or less thinking about the dog and not so much Tom Hanks and what he's doing.

[10:49] Olaf: Okay, that's surprising because to me, Turner and Hooch was a big stepping stone in his career where you could see him more on a serious side than just comedy.

[10:56] J.J.: Well, it's interesting that you mentioned that because we're about to get to my number 20.

[11:02] J.J.: And my number 20 film is a movie called Punchline that he did with Sally Field in the late 80s.

[11:09] J.J.: The film itself didn't do well because it's about the world of stand-up comics. It's more of a dramedy that wasn't really marketed well, but the reason why I like this movie, the reason why it's on my list is because this is an opportunity that you get to see him not be really likable.

[11:22] J.J.: You're not really sure if you want to root for him. He's really crass, which you don't really see. Like after A League of Their Own and his career went to that next level, he really stopped playing these sorts of characters.

[11:36] J.J.: He started really playing the nice guy and leaning into those characters, and he did that for a good, I want to say, decade before he really started branching out again.

[11:46] J.J.: But this movie is a really good opportunity to see him sort of play this character that you feel sorry for in some cases. He does have an arc. He's not one-dimensional, but he's also not like you're...

[12:00] J.J.: I have never seen this movie.

[12:03] Olaf: Right, and I don't think a lot of people have. It came out right after *Big*, but they shot it before *Big*, and they weren't going to release it because they weren't sure if they could get a studio to pick it up. And then *Big* came out, that blew up, so they released *Punchline* right after that, and then they released *The Burbs* after that. And so this movie sort of gets forgotten. Number 19 for me, *That Thing You Do*.

[12:31] J.J.: Wow! Okay, okay. First of all, I'm surprised that this is number 19, that it's not higher on the list, but I'm guessing that's because his role in this movie is a lot smaller. He's certainly not the star of this movie. He's a side piece.

[12:51] Olaf: Right, he's a supporting character. It's not his movie per se, from an acting standpoint. The reason why it makes this list is because this is his first movie as a director. He also wrote it. He wrote some of the songs in it. The soundtrack is great. So the creative element of wearing multiple hats, another reason why it's on this list. I mean, and it is, it's 19. The things he's doing from an acting standpoint aren't changing the world or moving his creative needle any, but it really is, to me, I love this movie. We've talked about it before.

[13:24] J.J.: Yeah. Number 18. You don't like this movie in the Meg Ryan, Tom Hanks, rom-com trifecta. It is *You've Got Mail*.

[13:36] Olaf: Okay, so here's the thing. First of all, it's hard for me to not want *That Thing You Do* to be higher, especially than this movie, mainly because it's such a good movie, but because we're kind of focused more on Hanks and his character and his performance in the film, I can see why this would be higher because he's actually a main character. I just don't like this movie. And it's not because I don't think it's a decent movie. It's a very enjoyable, passable rom-com. It's just, we already saw this in *Sleepless in Seattle*, which is far superior. So that's why I have a problem with this movie. So that it's in the bottom five, I'm okay with.

[14:29] J.J.: Sure. Right. I haven't shocked you in any way yet. I mean, I'd put it at 20, even though I've not even seen this *Punchline* movie.

[14:36] Olaf: You're blindly giving *Punchline* a higher ranking. Now I'm going to try to go find *Punchline* somewhere and watch it just so I can go. Yeah, I was right.

[14:47] J.J.: Yeah, just so you can validate. But then I'll still be like, but *Turner and Hooch*. *Turner and Hooch* should have been up there. I think you would have put *Turner and Hooch* over *You've Got Mail*. *You've Got Mail* probably wouldn't even make your top 20.

[15:03] Olaf: I would be hard-pressed to put it in my top 20, only because he did a better job in this role in *Sleepless in Seattle*.

[15:10] J.J.: Yeah. Moving on to number 17, and he's my favorite actor. So for me, all of these movies to me are bangers. They're all really great films. So like you had mentioned, the term I was trying to think of earlier is I'm just trying to make this list a little more nuanced in terms of performance and quality of film and the other parts that are also involved. So number 17. He comes from that side of the tracks with nuanced.

[15:37] Olaf: Yes. I had to pull out my thesaurus. Sorry. 17, *The Green Mile*. Frank Darabont's number two to *Shawshank* of adapting a Stephen King book. Frank Darabont is the best at adapting Stephen King books. I mean, prison books. But for me, *Green Mile* is 17, because again, it is an ensemble piece. And Tom Hanks is very serviceable as Paul Edgecombe as the main prison guard. And he brings that sort of grounded gravitas that Tom Hanks brings to these sorts of characters and authority.

[16:14] J.J.: Yeah. Well, he is our window into this world. We're seeing it through his eyes. We're experiencing everything through him. And he's such an amazing conductor for us.

[16:27] Olaf: Yeah. And he does such a great job that you feel going into this piece and most seasons, but going into this heavy material, you're going to be okay, because he's going to make sure that you're okay as a viewer. Right. And so when you watch *The Green Mile*, I'm like, man, it's going to be all right, even though all of these things are happening. And, you know, with the other inmates and with, you know, John Coffey, played by the late, great Michael Clark Duncan, that in terms of overall performance, he's in there with everybody like everybody's doing great work. So, no, it's just a great movie. So it's sad to see a solo. Well, I'm hoping that you'll be okay. Why? With everything else. So we'll see. We'll see as we move into the number 16, which is we're getting out of the bottom five. I'm going with 2016's *Sully*.

[17:18] J.J.: Really?

[17:23] Olaf: Which is the true story. Again, this is now we're getting into every other film that this that Tom makes does. He's playing a real-life person.

[17:31] J.J.: Yeah. And I just I would have picked other films above this that he played a real-life person.

[17:37] Olaf: You would have put this lower or you would have put this higher.

[17:40] J.J.: Probably wouldn't have been on my list.

[17:42] Olaf: It would have been on your list. Okay.

[17:43] J.J.: I think. Well, now you're assuming that other real-life people didn't make money.

[17:46] Olaf: I'm not saying that there's not other portrayals of him playing a real-life person. I'm just saying, like, I would have probably put *Saving Mr. Banks* or at least the Mr. Rogers film.

[17:59] J.J.: *Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood*.

[18:04] Olaf: Yeah. The *Sully* movie.

[18:08] J.J.: With *A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood*, it's not really his movie. I mean, he is a supporting character in that movie as well. He plays Mr. Rogers, but he it's really more about the Michael Reese journalist character more.

[18:16] Olaf: I get it. It's just. Right. As you know. Yeah. I guess I'm just like if if you were like, you can't take it off the list, then this would be number 20. And *You've Got Mail* is 19. And *Punchline* has crept its way up to number 18.

[18:36] J.J.: This is amazing. I haven't even seen *Punchline*.

[18:39] Olaf: *Punchline* is going to be in the top 10 before you even watch it.

[18:42] J.J.: I'm excited. You keep putting these movies up in front of it.

[18:58] Olaf: So this one, I feel, is where I'm going to raise your eyebrows because I feel like you're going to want this to be higher. You love raising my eyebrows.

[19:05] J.J.: I can see them. At least I can. I got one up already.

[19:12] Olaf: Number 15 is *The Road to Perdition*. Sam Mendes, 2002 *Road to Perdition*.

[19:19] J.J.: Yeah. Wow. I love that it's on the list. Yes. Yes, absolutely. It makes me sad that it's number 15 and not higher for sure. But I guess I could understand a little bit because his performance in this is so quiet and reserved and unattached. He's got all the walls up. I mean, we're not supposed to watch the movie through his eyes. He's not the one taking us along. It's his son Michael.

[19:43] Olaf: Right. You're watching it through the kid.

[19:54] J.J.: It's a role that you're not used to seeing from him because he's been the nice guy, the guy everybody loves. And he's still a nice, caring person in his own way, but he's very, very much a solitary figure and who's super, super reserved. I'm sure it was part of the intention of the director, but you almost feel like as you're watching this movie through the eyes of the son, you are also wanting to earn his approval, earn him opening up to you as you go along. It's a beautiful movie. I wish it got more love and credit because it's just fantastic. Paul Newman's last live-action film. And it's a great, great performance, I think. So I feel like it should definitely be higher.

[20:44] Olaf: Right. And that's valid. And I understand that. I just felt like as we move up, there are certain other movies that are more impactful.

[20:50] J.J.: Yeah, of course, like *Sully*.

[20:58] Olaf: Hey, *Sully* is lower. So, you know, *Sully* was lower. *Sully* was not above *Road to Perdition*. What is above *Road to Perdition* is my number 14, the 1984 breakout role for Tom Hanks. And that is *Splash*.

[21:11] J.J.: Okay, I'm glad. Thank God this is on the list.

[21:20] Olaf: Yeah, of course. Hey, of course. Come on. How can we leave *Splash* off the list? I don't know. You put *Sully* on there and you left off some of the other ones. But *Turner and Hooch*, to me, *Splash* is the movie that I, as a child, really kind of identified Tom Hanks as an actor, as a character. I try to think back, when do I remember registering Tom Hanks? And for me, the earliest I can remember is *Splash*.

[21:40] J.J.: It's interesting is that I just did a rewatch of this movie with my family. And he's not there are a lot of moments he's kind of a jerk a lot of times in this movie. He's not like the most likable guy he is. You know, he's flawed, I guess, would be. And it's great because it's this performance under the guise of this. I wouldn't call it a rom-com. It's not a romantic comedy. It's kind of a romance film with some comedy elements. You know, John Candy, Eugene Levy creating those moments. But for him, you do get to see him sort of play this flawed, everyday kind of guy who he plays the straight man, like the quintessential straight man in *Splash*.

[22:32] Olaf: Yeah, absolutely. So that's why it is where it is on the list that I feel like everything above this builds off of what that was. And, you know, that's, that's why I probably would have put *Splash* lower. I think you would have put *Road to Perdition* and *Punchline* in your top 10.

[22:47] J.J.: Again, I haven't seen *Punchline*, but I already know that it's better than *Sully* and *You've Got Mail*. But *Splash*, I don't know, *Splash*, I could see a 15 or 16.

[23:02] Olaf: Okay, okay. Moving right along to number lucky number 13 is the 2002 Steven Spielberg cat and mouse movie *Catch Me If You Can*.

[23:10] J.J.: What a movie.

[23:18] Olaf: Yeah, he plays Carl Hanratty, the FBI agent who is after Frank Abagnale Jr. played by Leonardo DiCaprio. This movie, I love this movie so much. It's a fun movie. The soundtrack by John Williams is a lot of people back then I feel like a lot of people I knew were criticizing John Williams's score for being lazy, but it's not it's very jazzy. It's very, it's rude. How is how is that? I mean, you want to talk about John Williams lazy, let's talk about the last couple of films he's scored, because he just took old stuff. But we're not talking about that. But man, no, this soundtrack is so good. But it is. Yes, you're right. We're not talking about John Williams. That's a different episode. We are talking about Tom Hanks in *Catch Me If You Can*.
