[0:00] J.J.: So, my wife and I finally took our long-awaited honeymoon to Costa Rica, and I highly recommend Costa Rica. I have never been to Costa Rica, but I've heard nice things. We had never been either, and like I said, we took a delayed honeymoon by like four and a half years. Well, better late than never. Yeah, we spent five days in Costa Rica, all-inclusive. It was awesome. We did a couple of excursions. We went ziplining. We went through a rainforest. We did a catamaran boat tour, sunset tour. We did a mud bath. Oh, that sounds nice. And a hot springs. So, that's where we were recently. It was great. So again, as my wife says, 10 out of 10 recommend.
[0:50] Olaf: Have you ever tried surfing?
[0:51] J.J.: Yes, I have.
[0:52] Olaf: How did that go?
[0:53] J.J.: Not well. Not well. This was about 10 years ago, 11 years ago. We went out surfing, and it was okay. I didn't get hurt, and it was a lot of fun, but it wasn't the best experience I've ever had. I would definitely try it again because I think it's cool, but I've tried it. I tried it once in my youth, and as George Costanza would say, the sea was angry that day, my friend.
[1:28] Olaf: Like an old man returning soup from a deli.
[1:30] J.J.: It was not smooth, and it almost felt like the ocean was like, you have no business not only swimming in me, but also don't even try surfing.
[1:44] Olaf: Right.
[1:45] J.J.: And my friend that I was with, he had his dad's old longboard.
[1:50] Olaf: Okay.
[1:50] J.J.: It's just this big, massive thing that I remember being kind of heavy, and we would go out, and I would try to do it, and it just wasn't going well, and the waves were just tumble-drying me all over the place.
[2:02] Olaf: Oh, sure, just beating you down.
[2:03] J.J.: And then it almost seemed like at one point, the ocean realized, wait, why am I doing all the work? He brought me a weapon and just proceeded to beat the hell out of me with the longboard.
[2:18] Olaf: Sure.
[2:18] J.J.: And just finally dragged myself back onto the beach and was like, well, that was a failed attempt. It'll let you know who's in charge, so to speak, and it'll tell you, you have no business being out here.
[2:34] Olaf: It reminded me repeatedly and often.
[2:39] J.J.: Yeah. Yeah, so that was my only foray into surfing.
[2:44] Olaf: Okay, yeah. And it's been over a decade since I've tried, or the last time I did it. Overall, Costa Rica was amazing. I definitely would want to go back. Definitely would take the kids too, and I would totally go back, but there's so many other places that I want to go to first. But if Costa Rica ended up on the shortlist again, absolutely, definitely recommend.
[3:05] J.J.: I've got a trip coming up soon with the fam, going to Greece.
[3:11] Olaf: I would definitely go back there again. Beautiful.
[3:14] J.J.: Yeah, and there's so many places that we're not going to see, so I'd love to be able to come back and take a look at someday. But we're not here to talk about traveling.
[3:21] Olaf: We are here to get back to the movie theater.
[3:42] J.J.: I am here. I am signed on, and I don't know if I'd say I'm ready to go, but I'm as ready as I feel like I'm going to be based on what's on the menu.
[3:55] Olaf: That's right. And today's menu, it's a special menu. It's one of my favorites. We've got more trivia coming at you.
[4:04] J.J.: Trivia where we try to stump JJ in his movie knowledge, and you, the audience, get to play along at home and see how well you do. Now, if you have listened before, JJ did very well.
[4:19] J.J.: I feel like I did too well. I feel like if I was nervous that time, I'm more nervous now.
[4:26] Olaf: Because I have an absolute bloodthirst urge to knock you off that pedestal.
[4:32] J.J.: Right, and I can feel that. I can feel that, and I just need to be okay with it happening. We'll see what happens.
[4:39] Olaf: Now, before we jump into the trivia, just a quick breakdown of how we do this. Once again, I'm just going to ask the question. I may have to ask it more than once, depending on how JJ's doing with figuring out the answer, and then we'll see how he does. He's obviously going to try to stretch giving his answer a little bit because he wants you at home to have a little bit of time to figure it out before he gives an answer. So, don't think that he's just stringing us along, which he probably is.
[5:12] J.J.: I will let you know, because I did in the last episode, there were a question or two where I was talking myself to the answer. So, there'll be moments where that'll happen.
[5:21] Olaf: Now, if he starts taking too long, then we might have to start implementing a timer.
[5:28] J.J.: Oof, that's fair.
[5:29] Olaf: That would definitely add some pressure as well.
[5:32] J.J.: Yeah, some intrigue and drama.
[5:34] Olaf: We'll look into that. We'll come back, but there's no timer on this one today. As always, Johnny will be supplying us with all of our amazing sound effects, and he's going to hit us with a brand new theme song for Trivia. I'm so excited.
[5:50] J.J.: Yes, exciting.
[5:51] Olaf: So, with all that said, let's go to Back to the Movie Theater's Trivia Night.
[5:57] J.J.: Back to the Movie Theater Trivia Game.
[6:02] Olaf: All right, here we go, ladies and gentlemen. All right, we've got a set of questions all ready to go. I've worked hard on this. Again, there might be some easy ones thrown in there, but ultimately, the whole point is to challenge our competitor, which today is JJ. So, good luck, JJ.
[6:22] J.J.: Thank you. I'm going to need it.
[6:24] Olaf: And good luck to everybody listening at home.
[6:26] J.J.: Absolutely. Absolutely. Let's have some fun. Let's all get angry at Olaf together.
[6:31] Olaf: All right, so here we go with our Back to the Movie Theater Trivia Night. Question number one. Question one. What was the first movie to be rated PG-13?
[6:48] J.J.: Okay. Man, I got to tell you, I am so nervous right now. I got to really just take a deep breath. So, for those people who don't know, PG-13 was a rating that didn't exist until 1984, mainly because of Indiana Jones and Temple of Doom and Gremlins. And like I've told my son, not all PG movies are created equal because prior to PG-13 and even after PG-13, there were PG movies that either needed to be PG-13 or rated R. So, and like we've mentioned in previous conversations, thanks to Steven Spielberg, PG-13 does exist. So, now, I don't think you're trying to trick me. You're not trying to trick the audience because unless you're really going to get technical with what movie came out first. That is the question.
What was the first movie to be rated PG-13? Okay. Man, that is a fantastic question. And I'm already sweating bullets over here. This is just question number one. Now, is there, oh, I'm already feeling really good about this one. Is there any sort of hint or what? I don't know. I'm just wondering, you know, because this is trivia. I'm not holding your hand.
[8:13] Olaf: Okay. Okay. All right. So, because, all right, because here's the thing. This is how nervous I was. I was about to rattle off Temple of Doom and Gremlins, which are the movies that spawned PG-13 and not the movie that was the first PG-13 movie. So, now, I've got to reset my brain here and reset my mind. For all the viewers, viewers, for all the listeners at home, just know that when we do another one of these trivia episodes, there is now going to be a timer.
[8:40] J.J.: That's fair.
[8:41] Olaf: Question number one, we're 20 minutes in.
[8:48] J.J.: 20 minutes in. Yeah. Okay. Man, I'm really racking my brain over here and desperately trying to think of... Oh, my gosh. I don't know how much time has gone by, but I'm going to have to call it. We need an answer.
[9:06] J.J.: Okay. All right. I'm going to go with, not confidently, but I'm going to go with first movie to get a PG-13 rating. I'm going to go with Red Dawn. Red Dawn is my final answer. Judges?
[9:21] Olaf: Oh, my gosh. I cannot believe you got that. Yes. What was the first movie to be rated PG-13? The correct answer is Red Dawn. Yes. I'm so excited. I'm so upset. I'm so excited. We're done. Folks, thank you so much. That was tonight's trivia. I'm out. Yeah. It took him the entire episode to think of it. Thank you for joining in, for supporting me, for supporting this episode. Thank you so much. Wow. I am wiped out. Oh, my gosh. All right. Let's move on. I'm already upset.
[10:04] Olaf: Here we go. Question number two. Number two, what is the nickname of the dog in Sandlot? And what is its actual name?
[10:16] J.J.: Oh, okay. All right. It's a good question. Okay. Oh, oh, okay. I would have gone with just one name, but both, but now the actual name of the dog in Sandlot is Hercules.
[10:32] Olaf: Judges?
[10:33] J.J.: Yes. Because I can hear the great James Earl Jones yelling from the porch, Hercules? Yeah. Now, you're asking what the kids refer to him as well.
[10:44] Olaf: Yeah.
[10:45] J.J.: Okay. If I'm not mistaken, the kids refer to Hercules as the beast. That's my final answer.
[10:54] Olaf: He got it, folks. All right. Not only did he get one, but he got both. I was like, wow, we'll throw a two-parter answer into the second question, make it a little more challenging, and he did it with ease. Extra credit. We are two questions in, and I'm furious.
[11:14] J.J.: See, I feel like you're putting on this facade, like you just used your best two pitches, and now you don't have anything left. Your arm's tired, and now you're just going to start throwing softballs.
[11:23] Olaf: I came out swinging. I wanted to pummel you with a right and a left.
[11:30] J.J.: Yeah, you did, but now you're talking like you're putting snot on the ball like Harris from Major League, where your arm is so tired.
[11:35] Olaf: Yeah, but see, now I'm going to hit you with a pillow on question number three. You were. You were definitely going for a knockout punch, definitely on the first question. That was a smoker.
[11:50] J.J.: Yeah, and number three, I'm just gonna pamper you. I'll take it. All right, question number three.
[11:59] Olaf: In the famous fake orgasm scene in When Harry Met Sally, who gave the line, "I'll have what she's having?" As people may or may not know, this is my favorite romantic comedy movie and probably one of my top five favorite movies of all time. I've eaten at Katz's restaurant in New York City. When you go to Katz's restaurant, which is where they're eating in the movie, there's a sign over the table that they sat at. It says, "This is where Harry met Sally," even though that's not where they met, but that's where they sat to shoot that scene, which is really cool. The lady in the movie that says this line, she doesn't have a character name. Are you asking me who she is in relation to somebody else? Because I would just say random lady in the diner, but that's not what you're asking, right?
[12:49] J.J.: No, I'm not asking for a character. I'm asking for who said the line.
[12:54] Olaf: The lady who plays that character who delivers that line is Rob Reiner's mother in real life, and Rob Reiner directed the movie. Yes, it was director Rob Reiner's mom.
[13:07] J.J.: Yes. Mrs. Reiner.
[13:09] Olaf: Mrs. Reiner. Yes.
[13:12] J.J.: Carl's wife.
[13:16] Olaf: See, I knew even when I made that question, I knew you were going to know it. I know how much you love that movie.
[13:22] J.J.: I do. I love that movie. It is an amazing movie. It's one of my favorites as well. It's one of the movies that made me want to live in New York. That's probably the top movie that made me want to live there. Sometimes, though, an easy question can throw you off.
[13:37] Olaf: Well, that's why I wanted some clarification on what you wanted for an answer, because the way you asked the question, it was the lady in the diner said it.
[13:47] J.J.: The whole time you're asking me that, I'm like, he knows what I'm asking. He's just being coy. Come on. I'm still trying to shake off the first question. I got to get into a rhythm here.
[14:01] Olaf: All right. We're three questions done, and he's gotten all three correct. Moving on to question number four.
[14:08] J.J.: Question four. What was John Candy's final completed film?
[14:19] Olaf: Wow. Okay. Man, that is another fastball. I'm rattling around two different answers.
[14:28] J.J.: Well, there's only one.
[14:29] Olaf: I know. It's hard to believe that he passed away over 30 years ago, and he was in his late 40s. You think about even if he had lived—
[14:42] J.J.: No. I think he was in his 40s.
[14:44] Olaf: Yeah, which is crazy, because even if he had lived another 20 years, think of all the things we would have gotten from him. We would have gotten more from the collaborations and things like that. There are two movies that I'm throwing around, and I'm trying not to overthink it, because there's a part of me that feels like you would go a little bit further here to try and stump me, to try and get me, which is fantastic, by the way.
[15:15] J.J.: Well, I'm only asking a straightforward question. You're the one that's taking it in all kinds of directions.
[15:23] Olaf: The two movies I'm thinking of, it's either Canadian Bacon or Wagons East, and I'm not looking at you, because I don't want you to think that your face is going to give me away or give an answer away.
[15:36] J.J.: I'm not giving you anything. This is a poker face.
[15:40] Olaf: So I am going to ... My final answer is Wagons East with Richard Lewis.
[15:47] J.J.: Judges?
[15:52] Olaf: Olaf is so happy at this moment. What was John Candy's final completed film?
[15:59] J.J.: Oh, here we're getting ... The answer was Canadian Bacon.
[16:04] Olaf: With Rhea Perlman, I think. I believe she said. Now, he left after completing Canadian Bacon and went and started filming Wagons East, but he passed away before it was completed, and they needed to use body doubles and clever editing to complete that film, but his final completed film, which was in the question, so he can't get mad at me.
[16:30] J.J.: That is a sneaky question. That's sneaky.
[16:33] Olaf: I don't know why. It was pretty straightforward. What was his final completed film? It was Canadian Bacon.
[16:40] J.J.: Now, hey, the fact that you brought up both of the movies, I was very impressed, because it's not like everybody knows those two movies. They weren't exactly successful.
[16:49] Olaf: That's why I didn't look at you, because I knew it. Once I said Canadian Bacon, your beard would have twitched. Something in your face would have given something away.
[17:00] J.J.: Look, I've hosted enough trivias to know I will not give anything away, because so many people are trying to get something out of me when they're turning in their answers.
[17:11] Olaf: There was a bead of sweat on the end of your eyebrow, I'm sure of it.
[17:16] J.J.: No, it's quite comfortable in this AC. So there we go. We got them. Four questions in.
[17:24] Olaf: Who are you talking to, by the way? It's a group effort back there.
[17:27] J.J.: I'm talking to all the other people who were like, that stuck-up flipping movie guy from the last trivia finally got another one wrong.
[17:39] Olaf: Here we go. Here we go.
[17:41] J.J.: All right. I can relax now. Gonna sit back and let that wash over me, and we're gonna move on to question number five.
[17:51] Olaf: I feel like, again, might be a little bit of an easy one for you, but you never know. You might surprise me. Question number five. Clint Eastwood made his directorial debut with what movie?
[18:06] J.J.: Okay. Clint. Wow. Talk about a filmography, not just acting, directing too. He's directed a lot of movies too. And his movies are amazing. I mean, he's 94 now, so I don't think he's even seen him recently, but it wouldn't surprise me if he's got a movie coming out right now, under budget and on time in the next year. His directorial debut, I feel like is like a Western. Maybe it's either a Western or one of his Dirty Harry movies. I'm leaning towards a spaghetti Western movie because I know he's directed one of those, but I'm going to go with, and this is the only one that's coming to mind. It keeps running through my brain. I don't think it's correct, but my final answer is Pale Rider.
[19:09] J.J.: The judges say...
[19:10] Olaf: Ah, man. See, I wasn't sure.
[19:13] J.J.: Two in a row.
[19:14] Olaf: Two in a row. Clint Eastwood made his directorial debut with what movie?
[19:20] J.J.: The correct answer is Play Misty for Me.
[19:24] Olaf: Oh, well, here we go. Like anybody's heard of that movie.
[19:28] J.J.: Oh my gosh, he's getting upset, everybody.
[19:33] Olaf: It's all fun and games when we're getting every question correct. Now he's starting to pout.
[19:36] J.J.: I'm not pouting. Play Misty for Me. What is that?
[19:42] Olaf: Yeah. All right. We've got them dead to rights now. That's two in a row.
[19:50] J.J.: All right, so here we go. Back to the trivia. We are on question number six.
[19:56] Olaf: Pale Rider is your final answer.
[19:57] Olaf: Number six. Who was the voice of Zazu in 1994's Lion King?
[20:06] J.J.: Okay. Great question. First of all, all-star cast in Lion King. I thought the coolest thing about this choice of voice actor is that prior to this, I think there may have been one other film that I've seen this particular actor in where he gets to talk. If you weren't a huge fan of this actor, the only thing you ever saw him in was Mr. Bean, where he doesn't say a single word. And then he ends up voicing Zazu in Lion King. The final answer to this question is Rowan Atkinson.
[20:39] Olaf: Clearly, he knew this one from the get-go. I had a feeling.
[20:42] J.J.: Yeah, I knew this one. Rowan Atkinson. The amazing Rowan Atkinson. Just comedy gold, comedy legend. Black Adder, Mr. Bean. And he did Four Weddings and a Funeral the same year as Lion King.
[20:56] Olaf: So people got to see him in that as well.
[21:00] J.J.: Absolutely amazing. Anything he's in—
[21:02] Olaf: He's fantastic.
[21:02] J.J.: I can't help but watch him. He's just so funny and just a wonderful human being.
[21:22] Olaf: Moving on to question number seven on our trivia. Question number seven. J.J. bounced back a little bit with a little softball question. Here we go. Question number seven. Which of these movies did Meryl Streep not win an Oscar for? Was it Kramer versus Kramer, Doubt, The Iron Lady, or Sophie's Choice?
[21:49] J.J.: Which of these movies did Meryl Streep not win an Oscar for? Was it Kramer versus Kramer, Doubt, The Iron Lady, or Sophie's Choice? Meryl Streep. Some would say the best actress of her generation, which bleeds into our generation. I think Frances McDormand is giving her a run for her money in terms of her quality over quantity of work because Frances McDormand has also won three Academy Awards. I believe Meryl Streep has won three, if I'm not mistaken. She won an Oscar for The Iron Lady. She won an Oscar for Sophie's Choice, and she won a Best Supporting Actor for Kramer versus Kramer. She was nominated for Doubt, but she did not win for Doubt.
[22:36] Olaf: That is correct. As always, the Oscar questions walk in the park for J.J.
[22:44] J.J.: That's right. Meryl Streep did not win an Oscar for Doubt, which is probably why I never saw it.
[22:50] Olaf: You only watch Meryl Streep movies after she knows she's won.
[22:55] J.J.: She won. I'm going to go check out The Iron Lady right now.
[22:58] Olaf: No, I actually wanted to see that movie because I just thought, what a cast. It's got to be pretty great, and I just never got around to it.
[23:06] J.J.: Yeah, I think they were all nominated for it because that was the film that put Viola Davis on everybody's radar. If you weren't following her theater career, she had done some small stuff in other movies, but up until this point, she was a theater actress mainly, and a phenomenal one at that. Then she got cast and nominated for Doubt as the mom, and then everything sort of blew up for her. Subsequently, her career went to the next level.
[23:36] Olaf: That cast is great. That's a really fantastic cast.
[23:41] J.J.: I mean, I'm not relaxed in any way because we're halfway through our trivia.
[23:48] Olaf: No, we're halfway through. We've only gotten two wrong.
[23:51] J.J.: It feels like I've gotten more wrong because these questions are so hard. I'm really having to think, I'm really having to focus and dig.
[23:57] Olaf: All right. Well, let's see how you do on this next one. When I wrote this, I was like, he probably knows it, but I'm hoping you don't. Who knows? Because I thought you would have known the Clint Eastwood question.
[24:09] J.J.: Nobody knew that! And to me, that's my wonderful surprise that not only did you not know it, but then you got mad.
[24:22] Olaf: I was laughing too hard at this on the hips.
[24:28] J.J.: All right, so here we go. Question number eight. In one of their first roles, who played a young Wendy Darling in the movie Hook?
[24:34] Olaf: Okay, Hook. Steven Spielberg. Robin Williams. 1991, Hook. Yeah, so Wendy Darling played by the wonderful—the older version of Wendy Darling is by Maggie Smith. Dame Maggie Smith, who this is wild. They make her look so much older than she actually is in that movie.
[25:02] J.J.: Yeah, that movie came out when I was like 13, and like, man, Maggie Smith! And I remember seeing Maggie Smith in like Evil Under the Sun about ten years earlier, and she looks amazing. I'm like, they really put the makeup on Maggie Smith here.
[25:15] Olaf: They really did. Yeah, she was fantastic. And so the scene with the younger Wendy Darling happened so fast. It's like a sort of flashback. You see her face. She says, I think she's like, "Peter" or something like that because Peter comes to visit her. He keeps visiting her.
[25:33] J.J.: And so it does happen fast. Now, at the time when I saw this movie when it came out, I didn't know who she was originally because up to that point, she really hadn't done much of the actress who played the younger Wendy.
[25:46] Olaf: So it wasn't until I rewatched it. The correct answer is Gwyneth Paltrow.
[25:50] J.J.: That's right! Gwyneth Paltrow in one of her very first roles played the young Wendy Darling in Hook. What an amazing movie!
[25:58] Olaf: It didn't do well, and it doesn't seem to be a movie that Spielberg's particularly happy with.
[26:04] J.J.: See, I would disagree. I think it did well. I think people—but there's this weird feeling around it.
[26:14] Olaf: This weird feeling around it seems like Spielberg was not like a fan of it.
[26:19] J.J.: Yeah, I don't know why because I think it's just a wonderful movie. It might have some flaws here and there, but I don't really notice them because the performances by everyone—there's so many wild cameos in this movie too.
[26:29] Olaf: Yeah, wonderful. Well, the biggest thing you hear is that Julia Roberts was like the hardest one to work with.
[26:40] J.J.: Yeah, there was a lot of talk of that during the making. Yeah, I think it did well. I remember the anticipation of that movie coming out when it came out, like people wanting to see it. The marketing behind it was like—it came out in December around the holiday, '91, I think. Critically, it was uneven, but I think over time, there's a beloved feeling around it, especially people our age. I mean, they really captured the magic of Neverland.
[27:07] Olaf: And I don't think anybody could do what Robin Williams did by taking an older adult, right? Grown-up Peter Pan and find his child inside him again to be the young Peter Pan.
[27:17] J.J.: Yeah, and the performance of Dustin Hoffman is probably one of my favorite Dustin Hoffman roles of Captain Hook. He's just so good. And Bob Hoskins is—
[27:35] Olaf: Oh my gosh, I mean, it's just so good. The music is fantastic. John Williams just nailing it. I've always loved the movie. I don't understand why it had such a rough—
[27:48] J.J.: I think it's fantastic. One of my favorite scenes is when—and it's kind of gross—is when Hook and Smee are talking in his quarters, and he's trying to calm Hook down. He takes—he puts his fingers in his ears and gets his earwax out of his ears and starts to like—it's like forming Hook's mustache with it.
[28:12] Olaf: Yeah, it's so subtle and gross and funny all at the same time. And I love it! Every time I see it, I crack up.
[28:20] J.J.: I was like, was he told to do that or did he choose to do that?
[28:23] Olaf: Yeah, I wonder if there was a decent amount of improvising on set because you can't not let Robin Williams improv. You can't. He's gonna do it anyway. Maybe he's just gonna use up a bunch of takes just to get it out of his system. But you know he's gonna do it. So I wonder if Dustin Hoffman and Bob Hoskins were having fun and improvising because it looks like they're having the time.
[28:50] J.J.: Oh yeah, it looks like they're having—it looks like such a fun time on set. It looks like they are all having such a great time just being together. Just a great movie, Hook. Gotta check it out if you haven't seen it, and if it's been a while, rewatch it. You won't be disappointed.
[29:05] Olaf: No, not at all. I love that movie. It's great. So here we go, moving on. We're at question number nine.
[29:11] J.J.: Number nine. What was the first movie to feature a toilet flushing?
[29:17] Olaf: Oh my goodness, what was the first movie to feature a toilet flushing? Was it the—was it the "Clenny's with Misty" movie? Did they flush a toilet? "Come See About Misty" or "Misty and Me" or "Play It Again, Misty"? What was the first movie to feature a toilet flushing?
[29:39] J.J.: This is one of those where I feel like you went a little too far in the obscure category of trying to get me.
[29:45] Olaf: But okay, I mean, I don't know. We'll find out. You've got to answer the question first.
[29:51] J.J.: I mean, at this point, I'm just—you know, without any sort of assistance or context, I have no idea. I can't even—I don't know. There's so many movies. It'd be like saying, "What was one of the first movies to have a guy run a red light in a movie?" You know?
[30:09] Olaf: Like I'm not giving you anything until you answer the question.
[30:14] J.J.: I have no idea. I don't know. You don't even want to guess?
[30:18] Olaf: What was the first movie to feature a toilet flushing?
[30:22] J.J.: Um, "The Great Dictator," Charlie Chaplin.
[30:30] Olaf: Judges?
[30:35] J.J.: So this is kind of a big deal. This was a big deal when this happened, and because of that and it being such a well-known movie, it's a fun bit of trivia, which is why I included it. I actually thought you were gonna know it, and I was gonna be like, "Well, you know, of course he would know that."
[30:49] J.J.: But still disappointed that you got yet another one correct, but you didn't. You got it wrong. And the answer is—what was the first movie to feature a toilet flushing? The correct answer is "Psycho."
[31:05] Olaf: Okay.
[31:09] J.J.: Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" was the first movie. Fun fact, I just saw that last year, like a year ago, with my son.
[31:14] Olaf: And when you saw it, you should have been like, "Hey!"
[31:19] J.J.: No, I'm not flushing, you know, registered clocking frequency in which toilets are being flushed.
[31:24] Olaf: I cannot express to our listeners how unhappy and annoyed J.J. is right now. He's like, "Are you kidding me? You're coming at me with questions like this?"
[31:36] J.J.: Yeah, it's a twofold answer. One, I learned something new. Two, I'm flattered that you had to go to that type of question to try and stump me, to try and get me. That type of question—that is a very good trivia question.
[31:55] Olaf: Okay. All right. He's so annoyed, everybody. Moving on to question 10.
[32:00] J.J.: Uh, question 10. I really do expect him to know this, and it will be annoying that he does. But here we go. Question number 10. In "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," who does Ferris claim to be at the door to the restaurant?
[32:15] Olaf: Uh, this is one of those movies like "Back to the Future" where when I watched it, I go, "This is my guy." Like Marty McFly for me in "Back to the Future" was somebody that I very relatable—same with Ferris. Right guy playing the right character, playing the right way with the right amount of everything. So when they go to the fine dining establishment, I can't remember the name of it.
[32:43] J.J.: Yeah, the name of it escapes me, but not the name that he uses to try to get a table. And he looks at the reservation list and says, "Um, Abe Frohman."
[32:54] Olaf: Abe Frohman is my final answer. The sausage king of Chicago. Judges?
[33:01] J.J.: I was trying to decide if I was going to give it to you because you only said Abe Frohman, but then you followed it up with "sausage king of Chicago." I was like, well, he got it because he nailed it because he introduces himself as Abe Frohman, the maitre d' who says, "You're Abe Frohman, the sausage king of Chicago."
[33:17] Olaf: Yeah.
[33:21] J.J.: I had a sinking feeling that you were gonna know that one, and I could tell immediately when I asked that you were like almost bored.
[33:34] Olaf: See, now you're painting a very inaccurate picture for the audience who cannot get away.
[33:40] J.J.: He's either mad because he didn't get it. No way, man!
[33:44] Olaf: See, I'm getting done wrong here, people. I'm getting painted in a negative light. You know, I hope everybody at home is enjoying this, but I know someone who will enjoy it so much more, and that is our editor, Johnny.
[34:00] J.J.: All right, so we've done 10 questions. I'm at—you've got seven, three of them wrong. I'm gonna focus on the ones I've gotten right. I've gotten seven correct, and for everybody else listening, he's gotten three wrong.
[34:14] Olaf: So here we go, moving on to question number 11. What was Meg Ryan's username in "You've Got Mail"?
[34:23] J.J.: I know this is not one of your—it might fall into your top 10 romantic comedy movies for you. I don't know because it's just a remake of one of my favorites. It's actually a remake of another movie.
[34:36] Olaf: But yeah, yeah. So this was '98, you know, chatting, just messaging handles, things like—yeah, the internet was stepping out. I believe Tom Hanks' handle was NY152, which is like his address or the building number, his address thing on Riverside Drive. Her—I feel like her handle—I don't think she had any numbers in it following the name of it, but I feel like my final answer for her handle is shop girl.
[35:05] J.J.: He got it correct, everybody! The correct answer was shop girl. Shop girl was Meg Ryan's username in "You've Got Mail" because at the end he goes, "Don't cry, shop girl."
[35:19] Olaf: Yeah.
[35:24] J.J.: Yeah, he's wiping her tears because "Don't cry, shop girl." Such a sweet moment. All right, so there we go. Question number 11 done. He's gotten it right. We're moving on.
[35:31] J.J. Gonzalez: The original Blade Runner movie takes place in what year?
[36:01] Olaf Adzit: I feel like it's a date that's already passed. It's a 21st century, but it's not 2015, because that's Back to the Future 2. It's going to bug me too, because clearly in the sequel, Harrison Ford is aged, and we already know what year that takes place in, based on the title. So I'm going to go with 2005. That's not right.
[36:26] J.J. Gonzalez: What was your answer?
[36:28] Olaf Adzit: I said 2005.
[36:32] J.J. Gonzalez: 2005 is your final answer. Judges?
[36:36] Olaf Adzit: Yeah.
[36:38] J.J. Gonzalez: The correct answer for the question, the original Blade Runner movie takes place in what year, the answer is 2019.
[36:48] Olaf Adzit: It was.
[36:50] J.J. Gonzalez: 2019.
[36:51] Olaf Adzit: 2019.
[36:52] J.J. Gonzalez: Okay.
[36:53] Olaf Adzit: Which is interesting, because the sequel came out before, I think it came out in like 2017. I guess it's supposed to be like 30 years? Okay. Yeah, I couldn't remember when, in the 21st century, it came out.
[37:03] J.J. Gonzalez: Okay.
[37:04] Olaf Adzit: Okay. Yeah. I've been wanting to re-watch that movie too.
[37:11] J.J. Gonzalez: It's great.
[37:12] Olaf Adzit: I just haven't seen it in a while.
[37:14] J.J. Gonzalez: And the sequel, I think, is fantastic.
[37:16] Olaf Adzit: Yeah, I thought so too.
[37:18] J.J. Gonzalez: It's so well done. It's such a beautiful looking movie too. It looks so good.
[37:24] Olaf Adzit: That's Denny, and that guy is on a whole other level right now with everything.
[37:28] J.J. Gonzalez: I'm such a fan of his.
[37:41] Olaf Adzit: Moving on to question number 13.
[37:45] J.J. Gonzalez: Tom Hanks, and see, I already know I'm in trouble.
[37:48] Olaf Adzit: See, guys, I broke a couple of my own rules with this trivia, because after the first debacle of trivia that we did, I realized I can't ask him questions that involve the Oscars, and I can't ask questions that involve Tom Hanks.
[38:09] J.J. Gonzalez: Yeah, I've already done that. I've already asked Oscar questions, I've already asked questions that involve Tom Hanks, and here we are with a direct Tom Hanks question.
[38:20] Olaf Adzit: So, I already know he's going to do it.
[38:23] J.J. Gonzalez: Well, now I don't know now.
[38:24] Olaf Adzit: But, you know, I'm just going to remember next time, follow those rules.
[38:27] J.J. Gonzalez: You got to stick to the rules.
[38:30] Olaf Adzit: Question number 13. Tom Hanks made his directorial debut with which movie?
[38:36] J.J. Gonzalez: And he's already nodding his head.
[38:38] Olaf Adzit: I am, because I love this movie.
[38:40] J.J. Gonzalez: It's a great movie.
[38:41] Olaf Adzit: It's a great movie. I love the soundtrack. I own the soundtrack. He wrote one or two songs on the soundtrack.
[38:49] J.J. Gonzalez: He wrote this movie, also. It came out in the mid-90s. It's set in the 60s, about a one-hit wonder band called The Wonders.
[38:59] Olaf Adzit: My answer is That Thing You Do.
[39:04] J.J. Gonzalez: That Thing You Do is the correct answer. Very good. Of course, I knew he was going to get it.
[39:10] Olaf Adzit: It's such a great movie, and I feel like it still holds.
[39:16] J.J. Gonzalez: But I feel like when it came out, I don't think it was as successful.
[39:20] Olaf Adzit: It had a box office run, but I don't think it was a huge hit.
[39:24] J.J. Gonzalez: But I think over time, it's been one of those movies that people keep coming back to.
[39:29] Olaf Adzit: During the pandemic, we watched it, and I hadn't seen it in a while.
[39:33] J.J. Gonzalez: And I was like, this is a fantastic, family-friendly film. There isn't really anything inappropriate.
[39:38] Olaf Adzit: No, it's very wholesome.
[39:41] J.J. Gonzalez: It launched careers for a lot of people.
[39:43] Olaf Adzit: Yeah, it is a feel-good movie, and you're right. The soundtrack is fantastic.
[39:48] J.J. Gonzalez: The soundtrack is fantastic. I love it.
[39:50] Olaf Adzit: Well, good job. You got that one correct. Surprise, surprise.
[39:54] J.J. Gonzalez: And we're down to our last two questions.
[39:59] Olaf Adzit: So here we go with question number 14.
[40:10] J.J. Gonzalez: Her first Oscar nomination, and everybody's going to be like, this is easy.
[40:15] Olaf Adzit: And I almost made the mistake of just spitting it out with confidence, Pretty Woman.
[40:21] J.J. Gonzalez: But it's not. That is not correct.
[40:23] Olaf Adzit: She was nominated for Best Actress for Pretty Woman. That was her second nomination.
[40:27] J.J. Gonzalez: But I would have been in serious trouble and hot water if I had gotten this one wrong, because this particular movie that she was nominated for is one of my wife's favorite movies.
[40:39] Olaf Adzit: The movie was shot in Louisiana as well, and she loves it. This is one of her favorites.
[40:46] J.J. Gonzalez: So Julie Roberts, her first nomination was for Best Supporting Actress for Steel Magnolias.
[40:54] Olaf Adzit: Steel Magnolias is the correct answer.
[40:58] J.J. Gonzalez: Yeah, it's been ages since I watched that movie. I'm going to have to give that a rewatch.
[41:03] Olaf Adzit: But yeah, what a great cast. It's a solid movie.
[41:07] J.J. Gonzalez: Oh, yeah, no doubt. And she was like 22 when that came out.
[41:12] Olaf Adzit: Yeah, she was very young.
[41:13] J.J. Gonzalez: The next year she did Pretty Woman.
[41:15] Olaf Adzit: And that, ladies and gentlemen, bring us to our final question of the night.
[41:21] J.J. Gonzalez: Question number 15. How do we think J.J. is going to do?
[41:25] Olaf Adzit: He kind of got into a slump there, but he's kind of bounced back.
[41:29] J.J. Gonzalez: There's 14 questions so far. I've gotten 10 right, 4 wrong?
[41:32] Olaf Adzit: That is correct. You've gotten 4 wrong.
[41:34] J.J. Gonzalez: So I'm already at double figures, so I've at least got 10 right.
[41:38] Olaf Adzit: I don't settle for that, but considering the type of questions that have been asked, everything got taken up toilet flushing in a movie.
[41:47] J.J. Gonzalez: I mean, come on. I cry when I see Misty or whatever it was.
[41:51] Olaf Adzit: I didn't give any obscure movies. These are all well-known movies.
[41:56] J.J. Gonzalez: Yeah, come see about Misty. Sure. Misty and me.
[42:00] Olaf Adzit: Wait until we – I'll start throwing in foreign films and see how you do with that.
[42:04] J.J. Gonzalez: Oh, no. You'll be answering all those by yourself.
[42:07] Olaf Adzit: Maybe not. That's not true. That's not true.
[42:10] J.J. Gonzalez: All right, so here we go with our final question of the night.
[42:13] Olaf Adzit: Question 15, what was Henry Fonda's juror number in 12 Angry Men?
[42:21] J.J. Gonzalez: What was Henry Fonda's juror number in 12 Angry Men?
[42:26] Olaf Adzit: For a second there, I thought you were going to say, what was his final movie? I was like, sweet. I know that. I got this. But that's not what you're asking me.
[42:35] J.J. Gonzalez: So okay, what was his juror number in 12 Angry Men?
[42:39] Olaf Adzit: Yes.
[42:40] J.J. Gonzalez: I couldn't remember if you had said the movie. Okay.
[42:43] Olaf Adzit: This movie has been remade so many times, too.
[42:45] J.J. Gonzalez: And, man, you started this trivia night and ending this trivia night with some book-end slammers.
[42:52] Olaf Adzit: And this is a great movie, too. And a play or a film, I wouldn't mind being this. I would love –
[42:58] J.J. Gonzalez: Oh, yeah. This is definitely a show I would love to be a part of.
[43:02] Olaf Adzit: Yeah, this would be a really fun show to be a part of, no doubt.
[43:05] J.J. Gonzalez: And it's been ages since I've seen the original with Henry Fonda.
[43:09] Olaf Adzit: And that cast, too, for its time, was really solid in terms of the pedigree of actor.
[43:17] J.J. Gonzalez: I think Lee J. Cobb is in this movie.
[43:20] Olaf Adzit: Okay, 12 jurors.
[43:23] J.J. Gonzalez: I mean, to get back to – before we close out with my answer, this has been an amazing, solid list of questions that have been asked.
[43:34] Olaf Adzit: Because I've learned some stuff. It's jogging my memory on other things.
[43:37] J.J. Gonzalez: But without further delay, Henry Fonda's juror number in 12 Angry Men, he was juror number 8.
[43:45] Olaf Adzit: Judges?
[43:47] J.J. Gonzalez: Juror number 8 is the correct answer.
[43:53] Olaf Adzit: Ah, I was hoping to get you on this one because, you know, there's 12 numbers to choose from. You know, maybe you might be close but not on the mark.
[43:59] J.J. Gonzalez: Exactly.
[44:05] Olaf Adzit: But then you come at me with this confidence of, like, why wouldn't I know that it's number 8?
[44:11] J.J. Gonzalez: I'm so tired. I'm so tired. My brain – it was a false confidence for sure. Man.
[44:17] Olaf Adzit: Well, hey, you went through the gauntlet of 15 questions and you came out a champion, only losing four questions out of that. That's pretty solid.
[44:28] J.J. Gonzalez: Well, again, like I said, you took it up a notch. The questions that were asked were unbelievable.
[44:36] Olaf Adzit: Very solid. So, congratulations yet again.
[44:40] J.J. Gonzalez: I appreciate it.
[44:41] Olaf Adzit: But, hey, I'm on the right track.
[44:43] J.J. Gonzalez: Yeah. Look, all joking aside, the first episode of Trivia was also fantastic. I mean, it really was.
[44:50] Olaf Adzit: The questions were great. The Meet Joe Black, the Paul Newman, the Alien Terminator, Predator question. There were various questions that were just pretty solid. That led to some really great conversation as well.
[45:01] J.J. Gonzalez: You definitely took it up a notch this time and you came in a little more motivated.
[45:09] Olaf Adzit: Knowing your opponent is the best way I could describe it. Now I know who I'm up against. I don't know.
[45:16] J.J. Gonzalez: I came into this feeling like I had three barrels harpooned into me and I'm going to take the orca down.
[45:24] Olaf Adzit: Yeah, but you still took me out. You still threw the oxygenated tank that was highly explosive into my mouth.
[45:33] J.J. Gonzalez: And took out the shark.
[45:35] Olaf Adzit: You told me to smile.
[45:37] J.J. Gonzalez: Yeah, what a reference. It took out the shark.
[45:40] Olaf Adzit: Well, that brings us to an end of our Trivia Night here at the theater. I hope everybody had a lot of fun.
[45:48] J.J. Gonzalez: I know a lot of us are quietly cheering that we were able to not take him down completely, but we tripped him up a few times. It was nice.
[45:57] Olaf Adzit: This is what I love because when you get knocked down, you start to gain that other audience of people that there's always room for a comeback.
[46:06] J.J. Gonzalez: Maybe people are sympathizing with me. I'm okay with 11 and 4. Like I said, especially with some of the questions, three of the four questions, you know, I wasn't going to know.
[46:16] Olaf Adzit: I certainly encourage people to let us know how they did on the trivia. And if you have any trivia questions, hit us up. Let us know.
[46:23] J.J. Gonzalez: I'm the one asking the questions, but I still love to get stumped as well.
[46:28] Olaf Adzit: And, you know, stick around. Stay tuned because we'll definitely have more trivia episodes coming down the pipe.
[46:34] J.J. Gonzalez: Oh, yeah, absolutely.
[46:36] Olaf Adzit: It's nice to do them every once in a while. It's a nice, special, fun treat.
[46:39] J.J. Gonzalez: I love it. I think it's a blast.
[46:41] Olaf Adzit: So until then, to be continued.
